Rolex is a toxic investment. Flippers and investors can no longer make money on watches. The greys are going to be out of business and have to dump their hoarded stock. And Rolex will keep churning them out.

Inflated prices have always been based on investors passing around watches among themselves and jacking up prices. Their economic model has hit the wall. They are classic bag holders.

And hype beasts, are they going to want to wear a toxic investment they paid 2-3X msrp? Imagine being the guy who paid $50k for a panda; how will he feel knowing Pandas go for $35k today, maybe $25k in a few months, and even 15k or less in a year or two. That’s like meeting someone still hoarding hand sanitizer and covid masks.

All those hoarded/investment watches will be hitting the market soon. It will start as a trickle, then as a liquidation. The only buyers will be die hard watch enthusiasts; the crowd that was here 10-15 years ago. And they are discount shoppers.

Pretty much every other reference...yes. Daytonas....no.

Yes......100%.

The likelihood of being a "Walk In" at an AD and getting one is VERY Low. So if your AD offered you one, its likely you had to purchase others....If that is your game, perfect.....

But, if you are purchasing a BNIB new date Daytona Panda at $5k over and no other rules.......

Do It!!!

Just some quick ‘n casual research…

In 2006, msrp was about $10k and I found this in the Rolex forum search from that time frame:

“ I have for sale a BNIB D series SS white dial Daytona. Watch has all protective stickers on it.

Price: $9100 obo. Including shipping. Continental US only. Pics available upon request.

If interested, email me @ [email protected]. Put in subject TRF Daytona or I will not open email. References available upon request.

Thanks
Paul”

yeah there was a period of time when it was going at a bit of a discount in the grey market. i remember doing some digging for a thread a year or 2 ago to mention the same but at the same time there were a few threads here recently about the watch world during that time and people said daytonas were either very hard to find at ADs or just impossible still. i believe that discount on the grey market lasted a short amount of time (maybe less than a year?) which says a lot considering the times

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=852640

people that collected through that time can correct me if i'm wrong

This post sounds a bit jaded, but the inflated prices of these watches were not done so strictly by hoarders or hype investors. SS Daytonas have been hard to get for many many years….at retail.

I’ll make a mental note to revisit this thread in a year or two.

Me thinks this prediction won’t age well.

In reference to the 2008 listing for $9100, never say never because if we go into a recession like that again than things could be bad, like I don’t have a job and can’t pay my mortgage bad, at which point buying a Rolex would be offensively dumb, but I digress.

Its worth noting the 116500 is a different watch than the 116520 (yes I know it’s kind of not technically speaking except for the bezel and “panda-ish” dial), but the Daytona-C since it’s release has been maybe the most sought after single reference Rolex has ever made.

Hyped, like waaaaaay overhyped? Yes. But I would argue that it has some genuine horological pedigree behind it too as the 4130 movement is one of the best chronograph machines ever made (best in Rolex terms for reliability and robustness) and that hype, while ridiculous over the last 2 years started happening in the first place for a reason.

Is it a 50k watch? No. Not yet and likely not any time soon.

I read your post as a bit doomsday/wishful thinking that you may be able to pick one up for 12k in the next 12-24 months. If so, more power man - I love mine. I personally just don’t see that happening.

In 2006, MSRP was $6,900 usd for white dial SS Daytona. I know because I walked into an ad and bought one right out of the display case.

Looks like the seller was asking for about a $2k premium.

Still have the watch and everything. It was a special time then. They wrote out my name with a fountain pen in calligraphy.

This is truth, $10K MSRP was still a few years away.

I'd buy as many as they'd sell me at that price

I'll still wear my 116500 for sure.
Rock bottom, it won't dip below 20k.
At that point, I will have lost 30k. OK. If Panda is at 20k, I'll be picking up a blue sky dweller, and a Patek 5726. This is a win.

This 30k loss is a drop in the bucket compared to my YTD losses in the SP500.
One is a watch. One is an investment.

And hey - it's only a loss if you sell. Until then, it's a paper loss.

hold, wear, enjoy, never sell, always buy.

I would yes it’s not a huge asking price over retail.
