Keep your SS Daytona.

I sold mine and never missed it. Husband has a WG Sub. Such a nice watch. I would certainly sell a Daytona to move into a WG Sub.

I sold mine for a ceramic ss Daytona and don’t miss it. It may be an iconic watch but it looks too monotone on the wrist. It did not have enough variation in color or depth for me when I would look down at my wrist. The ceramic bezel added that and doesn’t scratch either. I think if you don’t wear it and you can turn $12k into $25 k to fund a pm watch, why not. The WG sub with blue bezel is a beautiful watch. I would do it.

Some thoughtful advice and personal opinion that should help you make a decision. I will add why not have some fun with the watches and just go with what you want to do. Overthinking somewhat goes with the hobby and when you are dealing with 10's of thousands of dollars it is mindful to be aware of prices, availability and desirability when you buy/sell/trade. But in the end, it is about passion for the watches and doing what we desire. No bad move here as the values are the values and you are in the SS Daytona very well. I went down the PM watch route several times and have owned most of them from the Platinum Diamond Dial Daytona to DD's of all metals to Subs and GMT's. Right now I own a YG DD II and a YG Yachtmaster and they get very little wrist time. Not because they are not great but because I just have other SS watches I wear. I would keep the SS Daytona until something just blows your doors in and you have to have it. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

This about it for a 50 year perspective, history always has favoured the SS Daytona. Even the big crown - it was the most unloved SS Daytona for the longest time - now clearly worth a bundle.

I personally like the 116520 on black dial over the white and prefer the white dial on 116500. Still, if this particular Daytona was my first I most likely would not unload it unless I have something else that I love more than this piece. To each his own, I usually prefer to add than sell, all the best!

Sell the white 116520, not enough contrast.

Of all the watches I’ve owned over the years, the one I regret letting go of the most is a SS Daytona. It was such a comfortable and versatile timepiece that fit well into my collection. But around when COVID kicked off, I got nervous on what the markets were doing and was working a job transition at the time and sold. I almost instantly regretted the decision, and after a quick email to the dealer I learned it had already sold.
I acknowledge PM pieces are on a different level and SS Daytona prices have inflated almost beyond belief. But think very carefully before you sell. If the markets continue to cool, I believe it will be even easier to get PM pieces at lower prices, whereas hot SS pieces are holding their values much better. Good luck on your decision and I love the OF Daytona BTW! |

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I typically don’t like to sell, just add and I do acknowledge how nice the fit is and how versatile. I guess the thought process is take advantage of the inflated price for SS and then wait for the PM to dip more and then upgrade. I believe I could secure a new Daytona from my AD eventually, although I prefer the black ceramic. Having said that I do not have a lot of white dials in my collection so this would leave a hole there. Appreciate your feedback! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've had one of those, it's a stunning classic and now discontinued watch that IMHO will only continue to go up in price, but what do I know? I sold mine for under $10K so obviously I'm a moron. I sold it because I couldn't read the time on it.
I don't drink the PM cool-aid; I've had PM watches and I don't think that they are worth the coin. if you've got that kind of money, then sure, go for it, but if you must sell the SS Daytona to afford whatever PM replacement, then I suggest that you do not.

I am content with my collection as is, and could foreseeably add another PM piece at some point without selling the Daytona, it’s not so much the money as much as it is trying to be somewhat fiscally reasonable with the hobby. I have 12 automatic watches and feel like I am getting to the point where I want to consolidate a bit, and I must admit it is easier justifying a full PM to the other half when you sell one of the collection pieces Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I prefer the generation before and after that particular one. I'd sell it to get a DD but not a PM Sub. Could also get a PM Daytona...

Traded my black dial 520 that I purchased new from an AD in 2015. At end of the day, I don’t want more than 10 pieces in my collection, all the polished pieces made in very monotone and it was just too damn shiny for me to wear… just wasn’t my style. I thought about it and realized sure I could sit on it and make more $$ in 10-20 years, but that would limit my watch fund and I would own a safe queen vs something I would wear… decided this wasn’t why I enjoyed this hobby. I traded for a new AP diver and couldn’t be more happy. If I had unlimited funds, it would have been kept. But, I don’t, so I grabbed a piece that I would wear.

I have the same dilemma as you. I own 116520 Black Dial and am thinking if I am going to sell it to get ALS or VC. I used to like Daytona very much but guess I keep it for quite long. The price at present is quite competitive, of course, down a lot compared to few months ago. It does help to save a lot of money to get an ALS or VC. My grail is Patek P but it is just impossible now, I can't afford to buy any PP I don't like just to get on the wish list...

I actually prefer the black dial Daytona, but would not turn down the white when offered. It is a tough call, and not sure I would feel the same if I had the black dial. Having said that the white does add diversity to the dials in my collection. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’ve had the same thought on my white 520, which I got new from AD at a discount in 2013.
But when I have factored in the potential for seller/trader’s remorse + cost to acquire again + hassle factor + getting rocked on gain, I’ve always shied away. No regrets on keeping it so far, even though I rarely wear it these days. It’s a comfortable, classic piece. |

As the 116520, white dial, is my favorite watch, I could never sell. In the late 2000’s, I almost sold my 116520 to purchase a 16520. My grey guy talked me out of it. I still would love to pick up a white dial 16520.

There are things I wish I'd sold when the market was "good" (mostly stocks, lol), but none that were at all sentimental or enjoyable to have. Forgetting about financial opportunity, the question is: Do you like this watch or would you rather have a different one? |

Nope! The 116520 was my first Rolex and my friend at the AD called and asked if I wanted it. Who would say no to a classic watch for a first Rolex. I do really enjoy it and it is a great watch on the wrist, but with other vying for wrist time I do think I could leverage the value to upgrade! I am going to wear it all week and see how I feel after and make a decision. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
