I like the idea of the AirKing.
Have you had the opportunity to try one on? That's the most important thing you can do. You'll know immediately if it's the right one or not.

Thanks Meyrin. Having guts doesn’t always look pretty or feel good but falling and failing forward is the goal. Things eventually work out the way they are supposed to. Surprisingly so… Speedy Moonwatch appears to be the hands down endorsement from the members here—really making me wanna go that route. Sub will be kept, worn and cherished for sure! Best to you! I love some of the watches coming out in bronze—partial to a green dials with that metal…so many beautiful pieces out there. But black is so classic and goes with everything…I do fear redundancy though. I should add that eventually, when I really make it, I’ll go for a Platinum (ice blue fluted) DD40 as my grail…that color slays me! If anyone has that reference, please post pics! I do too. I love the history and nod to the golden age of aviation. Love the green accents and that AK’s are missing from most collections. Under the radar and ‘different’. It’s been my leading option (along with Speedy moon) for a long time…like sticks in my head and I keep going back to it. But the more options I see, the deeper I get down the rabbit hole, the harder the decision gets! FML! First world problems I hope the AD reaches out with an opportunity to try one on in the coming days. I know I will know if it’s right. Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Happy Birthday!! Best of luck to you on your move and new venture. If you could score a Pepsi via an AD that would be my choice. Keep us posted.

I love that you gifted your brother your Sinn when you could probably least afford it. It's the greatest we can ever do with a watch we love.
That being said..... Fresh start...I would add some color to your collection to symbolize the new path. BLRO, DJ with a blue dial, or an LV Sub... Good luck! |

Great attitude OP.
After reading your story, I can’t help but to suggest what might be an unpopular opinion…to not buy anything at all. Instead, I would continue to wear your most cherished possession (best sub ref imo) and keep letting it remind you to keep pushing forward while saving for your ultimate goal…..and I would make that goal the purchase of your platinum DD. Good luck with your decision either way |

Perhaps Tourneau or WoS in NYC or Chicago does as well?

Yeah. It was tough, but the right thing to do…He mentioned he was looking for a ‘nice’ watch and had no idea where to start—I gave him a little education on the basics and then offered him my Sinn—he was blown away. I have a hard time being generous with ‘things’ but it felt so good to show my gratitude by gifting something beautiful…he loves it. I will wait to see what the sales associate is able to scrounge up and offer…color is a good idea and I appreciate the symbolism of some color. Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks Kenny—I appreciate that perspective. It makes sense. I agree, but also have a feeling of ‘heaviness’ associated behind the joy of my Sub. Kind of like a bookend in one part of life—something new and (slightly affordable) with a nod to the skies feels aspirational and symbolic in a new direction. The Platinum DD seems SO aggressive to strive for, but I love to imagine the possibility of affording it and just carrying on! Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If there’s something limited you like I’d seriously consider it. I’ve learned the hard way. Just bought a Speedmaster FOIS for 1k more than they were going for a few years ago. Speedmaster 3861 just came out. You’ll be able to get it for years to come. Plus Omega is a brand you’d usually be able to get a good discount on but most ad’s are getting msrp on the new 3861’s so they’re not open to bargaining much. Plus I know you like it but it feels like you’re being talked into it.
From your comment that you like bronze with green faces, makes me think if IWC. Have you checked out their pilots line? Just got a Portuguieser a few months ago. They make some quality pieces. Great warranty too. 8 years now. |

Thanks RFA—I agree with you. The chance to get something at retail from AD seems to be the move. The Speedy will always be there, and I like the idea of getting it at discount once the 3861 has been around awhile. I do love the classic reference, history and aesthetics—don’t love the manual wind or 5BAR water resistance. Outside of that, it’s always been one of my highest considered choices if I were to ever expand into a collection. I’ve looked at the IWC. They are beautiful and I like the Big Pilot and a few others, but maybe looking for a more robust daily wearer with a slightly less formal look. I work in restaurants. I would go with the Speedy. I have the 1861 version and the manual wind isn't bad once you're used to it. The Speedy is an excellent compliment to the Sub. Only nitpick I have with the Speedy is that the crown is a little too small.
The BLRO is also an excellent choice, but you may not be able to get it for your 40th unless you go grey. Perhaps you could set your sights on the BLRO for your 50th, or another special occasion? |
