Then they will own you. Your life, your work, your fun, your health, your day-to-day bodily functions.

That is a dystopian future in my book.

They already own me. iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro, airpod pros. I have no idea how to use any other phone, and haven’t used a windows computer in 10 years. I think they capture a lot of the market with the ecosystem they built. This is just another piece of the puzzle.

I guess what I mean is that even with a laptop, desktop, ipod, or ipad....these thing are not literally on you.

A watch, a wearable is, and they can collect much more information about you than any of those other devices can ever hope to gather. THAT is the play. THAT is what they want.

Information is king, and its collection and use are what ALL these other high tech companies are jockeying to get and command. At one point, they may even offer the devices for free just for the right to use.....essentially everything about you for their purposes.

Yes on cellular, no on underwater phone calls!

I've had one for a few weeks, and this is the first Apple Watch that I really love. The battery life, screen size and brightness have always been an issue for me, but the Ultra got all of these things right. It's really a game changer in my opinion. Some of the new dials and complications are super cool, especially the moonphase dial that you can rotate through the day with the crown and see the moon change with the date.

Haven't read the full thread but as an actual dive computer it doesn't look great, esp as depth rating for the computer is capped at 40m.

For a rough equivalent cost you can buy a shearwater.

It’s the same price as the Titanium AW7 and has essentially the same screen size...the case is larger and has double the battery life, though…a much more compelling reason for a lot of folks wanting this model.

This watch is intriguing. I like the titanium case, the added GPS and some of the features typically found on Garmin watches, but the Apple battery life basically eliminates this from being considered a real adventure watch. As someone else mentioned, this seems more for someone who escapes the office for an early weekend and wants to go seamlessly into activity mode wearing a watch that can do both office and the woods (generally on-grid stuff) on the same day. I’m currently considering the Garmin Tactix Pro, which seems to have everything you’d ever want for an explorer watch, but I doubt I’d ever wear it outside of its intended activities - not crazy about digital watches and being super “connected”, which I guess is another benefit of Garmin for me over Apple, but I would enjoy getting an adventure watch that I can enjoy wearing more regularly. To that end, my outdoor activity is not really multi day off-grid stuff, and the Omega Ultradeep, Rolex OP and Exp1/2, and panerai carbotech are pretty cool luxury mechanical options - obviously not at all the same thing as the Garmins /Apple and I’d be missing many very helpful tech features.

I do find it funny that my Speedmaster 321 is technically qualified to higher temperature specs than either of these digital adventurer watches. Guess if it can go to the moon it can survive a few hours in the mountains.

I must say, despite my posts on this subject, I am not per se against smart watches. They are obviously useful in many ways. So long as you understand what you might be giving away when you wear one, that's fine too.

For me though, I just don't need another screen in my life. I do not need another device that knows where I am, and perhaps what I am doing, and wants to notify me of one thing or another.

I simply have no need or desire to stay "connected" all the time. I guess I've already reached saturation point.

In my life, it would be a solution looking for a problem, and the funny thing about these things is that, in my opinion, they will find or perhaps create a problem for the next year's model to "solve."
