Im still learning cantonese. pretty good now everyone tells me but some things I dont catch if the conversation is quick I like to think im well versed in my native tounge , but I would just be fooling myself

Very glad I took Spanish in high school and college. It has come in very handy.

I am surprised, I would have thought that you and all your American friends would have chosen English for their first language.

Like all us Aussies have.

I also would love to master Spanish! It's my hubby's first language, and that's what he's teaching Ileana.

It's weird because being English I see the English used abroad as native to the country so in the US I see it as American not English (The use of MS Word and it's spellchecker underlines my point

) and it's the same with Australian.

I know it's only regional dialects and accents but although the language is the same, there are many, many differences.

Saying that, you are from far up in the NE of Scotland and the Aberdeenshire and regional accent there is one of my faves....specially when it comes from pretty ladies

I speak a smattering of many languages (Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Norwegian), Spanish being my best. I'd like to be fluent in any one of them. Some Bangladeshi friends of mine have been teaching me a bit of Bengali which always raises a smile in Indian restaurants. I must admit that I do have a large vocabulary of Anglo-Saxon words and phrases but decorum prohibits me from using them here.

I have always found it easiest to learn from a Long Hair Dictionary.
