Dave, if you like the Milgauss, I would suggest buying it.

None of us have any idea what is going to happen with respect to value, and I would suggest not purchasing on the basis of value retention. Beyond not having any idea what the value of these watches will be in the future, this can potentially ruin the ownership experience.

These are timepieces to be enjoyed, even if they depreciate substantially.

Any men's SS model will keep good value.

Any ladies' model will not. But it doesn't matter, because ladies tend to keep their watches, they don't "flip" as much

If you're buying your watch based on value then don't bother, you'll get paranoid about every scratch or mark that appears on it.

Buy a Casio and save your money.

Sorry but if you're buying a watch, irrespective of brand, you're buying it to wear and enjoy, retained value should be secondary and not important as you'll be keeping the watch for many years.

I'm with you on the Z Blue. There's nothing quite like it, and the riot of colours, polished surfaces, shimmering blue dial and green sapphire works for me, if not for everyone.

Nothing is guaranteed to retain its value, but a Rolex watch fares better than many. I'd consider it a nice potential bonus and not an essential feature.

I don’t think you should buy watches as investments, but I do like the fact that you can try out watches and not lose your shirt if you want to move on. I do consider residual value when buying a watch because I care about how much it costs to get out of it. Especially when you can’t even try some on before buying.

As far as the Milgauss, it’s stunning. Love the blue dial and the green glass. Also like the black version. Personally for me, it’s got too many polished surfaces for my liking. I have found I like my watches with brushed surfaces. But I still recognize it’s a great watch.

Any of the all steel sports models will hold value well. The Milgauss is not in the sports family and while its a good watch it isn’t as popular, as such doesn’t command the equivalent dollar for dollar amount at resale. But buy the watch that appeals to you, it’s you who will have to wear it everyday.

All this “watches are investments” talk has spilled into people over-thinking this amazing hobby.

OP your bigger problem is how to get one at MSRP at an AD. Canada is one of the harder countries to pick one up IMO. At the end of the day buy what you love and you won’t regret it.

I started off looking for a sub but fell in love with my deepsea and CHNR and have zero regrets.

“Buy what you like” is a terrible bit of advice. What this seems to translate to is “buy what you like, and don’t change your mind.” I know what people think it means, but it is not a very useful response, IMHO.

This isn't an investment forum, and the price fluctuation of a SS Rolex one way or the other isn't going to make any meaningful difference in someone's life. So if "buy what you like" is useless advice, what other metric would you suggest buying a watch based on?

Because it doesn’t actually give any real information or advice. The fact that someone plops down their hard earned cash on a particular watch and not on any of the infinite number of items they could purchased means they “like” it. They might “like” it, among other things, expressly because they think it holds value, or because it will impress other people or any other myriad reasons that I can’t think of. It’s their money, I don’t particularly care.

Spending the money means they have shown a preference.

What people are really saying is “buy what you like, as long as your reasons for liking it are acceptable to me/the forum”

So like I said, useless for an individual that doesn’t have your sensibilities.

It depends on wear as well. I've seen beaten up watches, polished edges, scratched crystals depreciate far more then a pristine model. TT models with diamonds tend to have harder resale value. I'd go for a steel datejust, OP or sports models for your first IF your solely focused on value retention. Hopefully your financial ability will allow you to expand into a less value retention choice at sometime.
