I'd go for a 5 digit Submariner. The case is less fat which I find more proportionate.

Yes they trade for close to a retail new sub, but you can find a great one significantly below secondary prices for a 12 series Submariner. Plus some of them develop a nice vintage looking patina.

If you want a new tool watch the 226570 or 124270 would be the way to go IMO. YMMV

I waited 25 years before I could get the sub I wanted. I’ve been on a list for another with my AD for over a year……I am still excited about both.

Your AD is lying to you, Rolex doesn't tell the AD's who to sell to. Find a new AD.
I should have been clearer. Corporate HQ for the jewelry store. They have multiple stores in VA, TN and NC.

How about this? Omega Seamaster 300M. Arguably as good (if not in some ways better) than a Sub, readily available, and can be purchased new for half the price.

I also like older model Panerai watches like the PAM 000. Built like tanks, can be found at reasonable prices.

On the other hand, if you are persistent and patient, you can certainly get a Sub at MSRP. But there are MANY other options out there. Just get something that checks the boxes and puts a smile on your face.

EDIT: Sorry I missed the part about you not liking the helium escape valve on the Seamaster. I used to feel the same way, but now think it gives the watch character. Nobody actually uses it, but rather a tip of the cap to the watch’s history. But again, so many options out there. Check out the Omega Aqua Terra, Omega Seamaster heritage models (no HEV), Sinn, IWC, Hamilton, etc.

just go grey, prices are lower now on the grey market. I suspect prices will continue to rise at AD's which will help balance it out over time.

Don't settle for anything else if that's the watch you want

If you're losing patience, just pony up and go grey. Join Moda on Facebook. Plenty of subs floating around No Dates for under $12k, Dates for under $14k.

It’s very frustrating to see this happening to you or anyone. The Sub is a completely reasonable and basic ask, so I don’t understand when the salesperson says that corporate decides…which corporate, the AD or Rolex itself? Regardless of either, I think it is actually very reasonable to consider giving people in the service priority for certain watches, of which models like Datejusts and Submariners are included. But this is the current reality.
Since 7 months is not that long (relatively speaking), I’d recommend waiting it out a bit longer since this is the piece that speaks to you the most.

You need a 14060/14060M or 16610. Try using WatchRecon to search.

Just put off buying for a year or two.

Things change a lot in the watch world over a couple years.

It’s quite likely that prices will continue to slide and availability improves.

Don’t go “settle” for something you didn’t want in the first place.

I think the waiting list, AD games, price, “is it safe to wear” questions, and the status symbol the watch has become has made me realize the current Submariner is miles away from the tool watch I was first attracted to.

If I could only find an alternative that I really liked. Not really into straight up homages. I have tried the Pelagos and I liked everything about it except for the thickness. The new 39mm Pelagos would probably fit the bill except it does not have a date. Same for the BB58. The escape valve on the Omega Seamaster kills it for me.

Any other suggestions for a great tool watch.

Team guy?

Get a SD43. Easier to obtain and blows the sub away in every facet. Sub fanboys have no clue what they are missing out on. You will thank me later and if you dont buy one and happen to see one in the wild just remember I told ya so.

Learn to love your Pelagos. It's a fantastic, functional dive watch, arguably one of the best looking divers from the Rolex/tudor house.
As suggested earlier, Sinn make wonderful, solid no nonsense watches check out watch buys dot com- And don't forget the humble Seiko Turtle or Willard. Buy a gently pre owned Sinn or Seiko and you'll lose basically zero, if that is a concern.
Upper end, Blancpain Bathyscaphe or Fifty Fathoms ( I'm biased ) both work well on bracelets or straps.

You might also consider a Sea-Dweller 16600.

The watch you are looking for is the Blancpain Fifty Fathom. It is the first diver watch, that came out before the Sub. True high horology and not as recognized by the wide public, hence safer. I would buy one in an instant if my wrist wasn’t to small for the 43mm diameter.

That's part of the reality with the Submariner. Older Submariners are going to sell for almost as much as new ones, and their values are going to, over time, rise.

However, you stated you want a tool watch. The five digit Submariner arguably fits that bill like a glove, especially with an aluminum bezel (compared to the six digit's ceramic). If you want to go even more extreme (and want something a bit beefier), the Sea Dweller takes it a step further.

Another alternative could be buying a six digit Submariner (an 11 or a 12 series) from a secondary dealer. I went this route and am very glad I did. The small premium I paid didn't dim the experience of getting the watch I wanted for almost two decades and plan to wear every day for the rest of my life.

It's an incredible watch, even if the current conditions for getting one from an AD kind of suck. If you want a Submariner, no other alternative is going to fully satisfy that desire.

Just stick with it. Once you get it it will have been worth the wait, even if it’s more than a year. Put your name down at as many ADs as you can in your area.

Get a 6 digit 116610 LN on the grey market. They are basically retail price now of a 126610 LN.

Take a look at the Seamaster 300. As opposed to the Seamaster pro. No HEV and much smaller case profile. Stunning sandwich dial and available in black and blue. Works on a leather strap as well should you fancy a change.

Just stick it out and wait. It will be worth it. Tune out all the noise from threads, hype, etc. the sub is an absolute classic and a tough tool watch. I wear mine daily and couldn’t be happier. There seems to be a lot of incoming threads so your day may come sooner than you think.

A sad reflection on the way AD’s do business. I won’t highlight the specific posts but, even today alone, there are posts from people who don’t want another watch but are being contacted by their AD’s trying to sell them one. (And they’re taking them…)

It would seem to me fair enough that limited and special pieces (meteorite dial or whatever) are allocated to favoured customers but the bread and butter subs/ datejust etc just shouldn’t be like this to obtain.

In any case it’s clearly not working. Chrono24 alone has 1,167 2022 model submariners for sale right now. This also makes me shake my head.

If you are near Roanoke/New River Valley, I am in the same area, as there is only one AD here. I waited approximately 10 months for a 126610LN, November 2021-August 2022. It was worth it, came out of left field on a Monday, so I would say just put it in the back of your mind. Enjoy what you have, and you will likely get one sooner than later. If not, go Grey. I have done both and don't regret either purchase.

Wait for the Submariner, I had a Tudor and trade it 4 weeks ago because of the thickness, it’s not a Rolex and it’s not a 5 digit Rolex either. 7 months is nothing!
