Your description of your past Seikos is enough for me to say I'd never wear a Rolex to work if I were you, even if what you're doing now is different - is there no chance you'd be called to do those activities where you'd bang up your watch?

Bottom line, when I'm at work, I don't want to have to be thinking about whether I'm going to damage my watch. I want to be focused on work alone. Luckily I have a desk job so I can wear whatever I want

Why not, its not like the prisoners will attempt to rob you! I think they're more interested in escaping or making babies with other prisoners than your watch!

I wear mine on patrol. Life's too short to complain about what could happen. Just enjoy the darn thing.

ETA: That's my Steinhart in that pic. However, the SS Sub isn't scared to hit the streets with me. :)

Sure, wear it to work. What are you worried about? Some inmate going to steal it? Where is he going to go?! He's in a prison!

I wouldn't wear it. Almost all personal information is easy to obtain these days, and I wouldn't want to give someone with a criminal history a reason to find mine.

If you are a prison guard, well if you get into a physical situation, you could get your watch bashed up against a solid object or if a situation arises, you could get bashed.

On the other hand it is cool wearing a nice watch at anytime.
Was that insufficient information regarding wearing a Rolex or dropping the soap Steve?

Yeah, he ain't going no where but he might hide the watch in his bung hole (anal cavity), where they are used to hiding drugs and shanks ... can you imagine all the cleaning it would require once it is found Will you still wear it???

Instead of sending to an RSC, you might wanna send it to a pharmaceutical lab to get it disinfected

Exactly... because that's where that watch is going if an inmate ever gets it off his wrist...

While not a prison guard, I'm a police officer and in your position I would. I say this because you said you are in "middle management" and as such wouldn't have much direct contact with the inmates. Were you working at intake/recieving (or whatever you call it where you work) I may reconsider.

As an Assistant Warden with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice I wear my 16610 Submariner everyday to work. In 23 years in corrections I have had only one incident with a watch getting damaged. That was 15 years a go when I was a Captain, and in a use of force with an offender and we landed on the floor with my watch crystal hitting the floor first. Luckily that was on a generic datejust styled watch.

All that being said, I do not wear my Yellow Gold Day-Date in side the prison. Don't want to take a chance on damaging that one.

I just ordered a NATO strap and am going to start wearing it to the big house. The band is what seems to take the biggest beating so the strap will make me feel better by not destroying the original bracelet. I'll keep an eye on it and if starts getting beat up I'll go back to my Seikos.

Physical damage from cell extractions and disorderly conduct breakup would be my primary concern. Many guys I know who are on the job do not hesitate to wear a Rolex on duty. My secondary concern would be possible rumors of others asking "how can he afford that watch". Best advice since it was a gift from your Mother would be to ask her.

How many of you, if you were in my position would say screw it and wear it to work?

Me, for one.

I've worn mine in a lot worse places than a prison.

I know nothing of prison, but (as you know) Rolexes are pretty tough, you would need a direct hit to the crystal or for it to fly off your wrist to really do any damage to it, and anything that happens can be fixed anyway (though it would cost you). It can take getting knocked around. As far as scratches go, that's just character.... I, for one, am not rich enough to waste a Rolex on occasional wear ;)

Sure, wear it. Look at it this way, when the fourth inmate gets done packing your pooper, the fifth can call time for his turn. All kidding aside, I wear mine all day long in classes full of gang bangers; most of whom wear so much bling, they hardly notice my little GMT. (I teach in a pretty rough high school where the nice ones are on their way to prison.) They see but don't even mention it.
