I completely agree. Sadly many believe anecdotal evidence with total conviction.

Congrats you sold at the all time high on 126610LV.

Between 1Jan2022 and the Ukraine invasion 24feb2022, prices absolutely exploded. End of December 2021, 116500 white dial was approaching 40k and that was nuts to me. In short order I had offers above $45k from dealers for mine. Was a brief, crazy window there where brand news were like $60k and aquanauts were $100k and we all agreed it made sense but weren't sure if anyone was really paying those prices. Oops.

The whole time I just wore my watches and still have them, no regrets and I can't invest any money to the Hindsight 20/20 hedge fund.

That is a terrible barometer for the market. Dealers are low-balling you on their buy price because they have moved to a consignment model and/or they can buy these watches wholesale from other dealers very easily when they have a buy order. They don't want to come out of pocket to stock watches, so that's why they are low-balling you. It's also the worst way for you as a collector to try and sell a watch.

I have only sold a few watches, one on consignment and a couple privately myself. Very easy and you will net way more than selling wholesale to a grey.

Glad it all worked out.

When an item increases from 20k to 30k (50%) within 6 months, i would say the prices are exploding. When they fall from 30k to 20k (33%), I would say the prices are imploding. But apparently, that's just a correction

Yeah… funny how quick dealers were saying “to the moon”, but when the market equally turns in the other direction, all you hear is crickets.

Just spoke with a local realtor/friend who said the following:

“Listings are way up, sales are really slow - but prices are holding”

My Realtor in SW FL said prices are falling and average accepted price is 40-50k under ask. This obviously is not the same everywhere across the USA.

I happen to know first hand there are some communities that are still selling homes way over asking price. The very high end is hurting. Midrange doing well because not only inventory is low, people who could qualify for million dollar homes when interest rates were low, cannot afford those big homes, and for pushed down to the middle section of prices causing too many potential buyers in that range.

Wrong. Don't care to argue about it since the dictionary is available to you.

I think very few watches would qualify as an "asset" but the vast majority do not.

If you get a Rolex sub at retail for say $9k and 10 years later it is worth $12k is that really an appreciating asset (especially when you consider inflation and service costs)?

On the other hand, if you got a Jumbo for $20k and it's now worth $80k I can see that being considered an asset.

Wait what?? Watches are fantastic Investments and a great asset class. Mediocre as a hobby, however.

Again. Dictionary.

They are indeed assets. Not discussing whether they are your best investment vehicle.

Imploded? When the grays go back to selling at or slightly below list, I'll know it's imploded.
