If I’m contemplating spending $$$ at an AD to “try” and get a watch, or on a list….I’m buying new from one of our trusted sellers. This “game” people play with AD’s is ridiculous IMO. YMMV

Read the thread on what’s happing to Shreve and the promise of a 5980 1r to a customer. Don’t do it all the AD eyes are all over this lawsuit.

This is the problem. Spending money on stuff not wanted is not a guarantee for anything not in the store. If the AD will put the watch on the counter and sell it together with the purchase of the other stuff, it may make sense if somebody wants the other stuff.

This makes so much sense, but still only if you will actually enjoy the jewelry you buy or really want that other watch. That guy that spent 220K had more money than sense.

A 2K to 3K buy at an AD is a non starter IMHO.

YMMV and best of luck

It helps but $2-3k most likely just get you small step forward

The difference between MSRP plus tax and grey market price for a GMT is roughly between $5 and 10K. depending upon condition and age. If you want the jewelry for your wife, great. But, $3k of spend is not likely to move you up in the eyes of the AD. I paid $2k more than MSRP plus tax for a Submariner Date in mint condition from a grey market dealer. The AD where I bought a DJ from said no chance on a sports watch except OP or DJ models.

I applaud you for sticking by your mentally challenged cat.

Doubt it will move the needle at all with your AD.

It will make your wife happy.

You would probably get more mileage out of that 2-3k if you took the AD to a gentleman's club.

The outcome varies based on the AD and the specific location.

My AD pulled this on me after I inquired about a Submariner, I would just put that money towards a grey market purchase and get it done.

I love threads like this. Although some of the grey market sellers are not nice to deal with, it is threads like these that help justify the grey market purchase. If you are willing to pay extra money for jewelry that you don't need in hopes that the AD is going to pay attention to you, then why not pay the premium in the grey market. Unfortunately many of the grey dealers are putting exorbinant marks up on the watches, but if shop around, you can find an equitable deal.

Also, as someone said in another similar thread, his relationship with the AD is more than at the store. They did things together outside the store. Unless you have this type of relationship with your AD, you will always be in line, after him.

That's the thing, you don't know how much $ in crap its gonna take. I have spent $11K over 3 yrs at my AD on gifts for my wife and mom. I have been waiting 2 yrs for a BLNR and still nothing. I will just end up going grey if I don't get it by the end of the yr.

I thought I read a while back someone who had a good relationship with the store manager said they had to spent north of 6 figures per year in their store for it to matter when it comes to allocations - granted it’s all up to the location but I wouldn’t be surprised if even 11k isn’t enough to matter

I wouldn't bother, no guarantee the watch will come any quicker-if at all- I'd just put the money towards going grey if uou aren't prepared to wait

Are you truly willing to prostitute yourself and your hard earned money to play a (losing) game for a piece of mass produced metal? Only you can decide.

Please note that if I buy some jewelry it would make my wife really happy so win-win in this case if I can get my watch.

My current spend history with this AD is 14k (Rolex watch)
Their jewellery will be at least 100% over priced. Only buy it if you can afford to take the hit. Personally I would only buy watches from an AD.

Buy from a grey dealer , save money,

Sorry but they aren’t worth this. They were pretty good in the days when display cases were full and anyone could buy them with no nonsense and that is all.

I would approach a jewelry purchase not as a tool to get you further up the list, but to get you jewelry you want. I would definitely make sure to not purchase anything you don't wan't/need just for the opportunity to splash out even more cash on a watch you do want.

But if your wife wants the jewelry, then go for it, perhaps it will pay dividends but I wouldn't have any such expectation.

This!! And 3.5k won’t be enough anyway. I have a 50k spend history with an AD and beginning this year i asked for the skyD blue jubilee. He said he can only sell it to me if i buy 35k additional non rolex products of them…

If your wife loves jewelry it is not a total loss. I have been in same situation when trying to buy an AP RO from an AD. Bought a diamond ring and earrings from a friendly SA who had put me on the list. End of story, AP pulled the license and SA left the company. Bye bye AP RO
