Ed White 321 vs Daytona: Which is the more special watch for a lifetime?

Omega has so many versions of the Speedmaster it has succeeded in making none of them special, except maybe the Snoopy.

I'd go Daytona 100%.

Beautiful watch. It absolutely can go to 50m...when new. The problem is that a manual wind watch is going to wear out the crown seals at a much quicker rate than an auto, which is why you see Speedy Pros fail when swimming from time to time. If you swim and shower with a Speedy Pro, I'd recommend getting it pressure tested quite often.

To answer the original question, I think the 321 is more special, but, if it was my daily watch, I'd pick a Daytona simply because of the relatively hassle-free, long-term water resistance.

King is subjective. I would never take a Daytona over a sub, need the cyclops date. Between the two I go Daytona.

If you use the chronograph function, the Omega beats the Rolex for legibility and ease of use. The Rolex looks to me to wear better and its bracelet/ case is probably finished to a higher quality.

While I hope to own both someday, I think the 321 is a better watch and is harder to get.

The 321 has the history and was designed to work in zero gravity, hence the manual wind. Do not like enough other Omegas to get the spend history to get a 321 at MSRP

The modern Daytona is only sought after only because it is hard to get. It is more of a status symbol than a watch...The pushers are screw down which makes the watch waterproof but less functional as a chrono. Most of them are hard to read, however I do like the new LeMans version...hard to get (for anyone).

I have a black dial DaytonaC and two Ed White Speedmasters (one modern and one vintage). I appreciate the Daytona for its good looks and everyday usability, but the modern Ed White is just so cool. It’s such an impressive execution of bringing back a legend. It has all the style of the vintage piece without the sense of fragility. If one had to go, it would be the Daytona.

Speedy > Daytona

Always. I do wish the Speedy was a little more water resistant, but otherwise it’s better than the Daytona in every way. Design, heritage, movement, price and availability. It’s robust as hell, too. Well maybe the Ed White version isn’t any better on price and availability, but I’d take a bone-stock Speedy over any Daytona, anyway.

I think Omega has some darn good history in the Speedmaster, in my opinion. I have a Daytona and not yet a Speedmaster, but cmon the Speedmaster was chosen by NASA for moon missions, and the Daytona was worn on racetracks by famous actors. I actually give it to Omega on history!

Both a white dial steel Daytona and a 321 Speedmaster have to be in my collection. I will always feel something is missing otherwise. Even if I have gold Daytonas, a Panda is a must, and even if I have a Panda a 321 is a must alongside the Panda.

Yes and you could get on the list for any Daytona even steel and get it, months or a year you will get it eventually. The craze only started with the new 116500 ceramic Panda in 2016 when ADs started keeping them in the back for preferred clients because how popular it became due to it's stunning looks, and of course the Newman effect after the auction results.

Personally, I would purchase the Daytona first and then, add the 321 Speedy...if you are talking which one is special than the other? I would say neither because both holds its own history

the historical significance of the 321 is because it is the moonwatch that actually went to the moon, that's why Omega is charging extra dollars on the modern iteration of this model...and the Daytona gets its name from the famous Daytona motorsports race event

so, take your own pick...

As you can tell from the answers, it’s subjective. Get what makes you happy. My two cents; unless you love the Speedmaster’s history and the intrigue they’ve built around space and the moon, get the Daytona.

Also automatic vs manual wind. While I love a solid manual winding movement, and I’ve owned some great ones, an automatic is just more practical for a daily.

For most modern watches, 50M means 50M and is fine for swimming.

50m WR is absolutely fine for surface swimming IMO, and I'd go so far as to say it has been for a long time. One of my first watches as a kid was a 50m WR Casio (a pre-cursor to the original G-Shock square) and I wore the hell out of that, including regular swimming in the pool and sea. Zero issues with it.

Since them I've had plenty of other 50m WR sports watches and all of them have been fine with surface swimming. Where you have worry is with 30m WR watches as that's basically splash proof (and in the case of the Breitling Navitimer, not even that).

Agreed, but, again, I’d be careful doing it with any manual wind watch like the Speedy.
