I have 3 PM Rolexes and when I want to wear something that a fellow WIS may appreciate or a IYKYK type deal I wear my AP

I should note that I do find my YG DD40 a bit loud

Rolex Daytona over the AP. The Daytona is iconic. The RO is — quite unattractive, more common than the Daytona (more are produced annually), and the brand is diluted by the quartz versions.

I find it hard to believe that there are more ROCs produced every year than Daytonas

Yet there are. Most of AP’s production is RO. We are talking 30-40k+ per year…

Rolex total prod’n of course dwarfs AP’s but model-to-model the Daytona is produced in lower quantities (all Daytona).

I love AP and I just happen to think that Daytona is the nicest dial configuration available. AP wears BIG. I have a 36mm thinner watch and it wears like a 39mm IMO. The newer AP's are often thicker too. Personally I would go with the Rolex here.

I was in a similar boat and went for the pm daytona. I wanted a piece that was loud and to flex so the daytona suited that purpose perfectly.

I am now looking to add a 38mm roc to the collection for daily wear. The pm daytona is an awesome weekend piece and a head turner.

Whatever you decide to get first will depend on what you want to achieve with the watch.

RO then includes chronos, divers, offshore etc, anything that was derived from the 5402.

What is your take on the annual steel Daytona production (black and white combined) or total Daytona production including PM?

AP hands down.
Much better finish, sportier look while being a lot less ostentatious than a yellow gold Rolex.

Just doesn't speak to me at all...

I would go for PM Daytona for now and PM AP later, I love both brands.

I love the 15500ST and would get that over the most of the Daytona's (the Le Mans and the WG, Meteorite dial being huge exceptions.) However, the 26240ST just doesn't work for me. Between these two, the Daytona, all day.

really comes down to whether or not you would be comfortable wearing YG as much as steel. APs are flashy even in steel but much more wearable as a daily imo, at least in todays world

AP chrono is not attractive, IMO. Daytona all day long!

OP they are both winners but convey completely different messages. The PM Daytona is much more audacious and noticeable to more people and will likely draw more attention at the mall. Many love that as a flex piece for the average person.

The SS ROC is much more discreet and most won’t even know what it is but those who know will know, like a secret club piece. Especially the blue dial. Also, I hope it would be less of a theft magnet in public which is an ever increasing concern these days.

If I saw someone with either watch on I would be much more impressed with the ROC wearer because that person is a lot more likely to be into haute horology.

I think going holy trinity or PM will both be very satisfying in their own ways. However, entering a new brand like AP would be more exciting to me than just a different flavored Daytona.

It just so happens that we have similar taste in AP, so I vote the 26240st. It's a completely different design language than Rolex and should offer more variety to your collection.

The AP is gorgeous, but it is big and wears even bigger. A big issue is can someone even wear the RO.

All estimates/guesswork (of course) but about 30-40k annually, combined.

You can partially validate by looking at number of ebay listings. Roughly equal for Daytonas and AP RO. Because of some factors that likely mean Daytonas are over represented, it confirms the snippets of “public” info… that more AP RO are produced than Daytonas.

Both watches are low production, so far as “mass produced” watches go, of course.

AP by a country mile.

The finishing, presence, and design language is something else. Hard to explain until you’ve lived with it for a while.

Rolex definitely feels like a tier below, even in PM. It’s all preference at the end of the day

If u want a good watch, Rolex… if u want to please others, particularly WIS, and have status anxiety, then go AP…Rolex makes better watches, full stop… AP hides its inability to produce reliable and accurate watches by polishing and finishing turd of a movement.. choice is yours

While I think you’re exaggerating AP’s limitations, the biggest issue (IMHO) is with the Rolex you get the best of multiple worlds. A more limited watch overall (rarer). Especially vs overall demand. Long term this matters. Higher R&D spend and a better movement. Rolex scale allows this. Particularly for a flagship type model like the Daytona.

AP you get a bit of “worst of multiple worlds” because it is high enough volume that it is no longer true “haute horologie” - even vs other equals like a VC Overseas. The finish is great but honestly my GS mechanical watches are equal in that department at a fraction of $. Style is subjective but I think the Daytona is more classic and will always trump the AP RO. Finally, for the image-conscious, the RO quartz offerings dilute the brand.

Since when has a Royal Oak became a "high volume" watch and the Daytona considered "a more limited watch"???

Between those two - and I'm a fan of some, though not all APs - I would pick the Daytona, purely on looks alone.

Of course, much would depend on which one catches your eye more when on your wrist.
