Now that's funny.

If the only proper use for a Sub is diving in salt water, then I'm guilty of not using it properly since I've not been diving in the 4 or 5 months I've owned mine (but I do have a dive trip planned for later in the year). But if it's OK to just use it as go anywhere do anything watch, then I had clients on the river 3 days this past week and I shot a benchrest rifle match yesterday. And maybe the toughest adventure of all, I'm about to go guerrilla fishing and launch my boat in a farm lake and take a bunch of grand kids fishing. Guranteed somebody is getting muddy/wet!

I wear mine because it closely matches the color of my Grey Poupon Mustard whilst dining.

Hello everyone. OP - great question.

My Sub C has not been diving per say as I don't have that as a hobby but it is far, far, far from babied. I've used it to remove and reinstall transmissions (2-3/week for 2 years straight), gardening, lifting weights and cardio, complete home renovations/demolition (dozens of times), swimming in ocean (including shark diving in cage). My favorite are the looks I get when wearing it in a mere swimming pool. Most folks are shocked I dare to wear a watch while swimming laps. To me, it underscores that most people neither have any knowledge nor care what is on my wrist. Which is how I like it!

Similarly, I did use my SUV to drive over a pothole yesterday, so I do have that going for me. Ok, it was a small pebble that lodged in my tire grooves, but I used my SUV for its intended purpose. I could just feel my suspension being in its intended environment !!

Cheers.

Yes !
I used to be into colorful dials, but then I
realized, watches are tools meant to be used (not to show off)
so I sold (them) and bought the originals (black high contrast dials)
and have been happy with the results !

Yes. I refer to GMT several times a day on my GMT-Master II for flight planning as a certificated pilot for 59 years, and for logging radio transmissions in GMT as an FCC licensed ham radio operator for 68 years.

Long Haul Pilot here.

Use my GMT for its intended purpose continually, same as I do the attitude indicator.

I use myGMTs when I travel to track the home time and the time here I am.

I use the sub for the ocean activities.

The Daytonas I just like to wear. Same with the others

Love seeing the real responses and the funny ones too haha. The point of my question is the Rolex site really highlights all these cool features of what the particular watch is designed for, yet I know no one who actually cares about it.

This perception can certainly apply to some (or many?) rolex wearers. But I'll offer in my case it has minimal /little bearing on my choice of rolex - as i actually initially shunned rolex in favor of brietling (navitimer series). With my active lifestyle (great lakes boating etc), the brietling just wasn;t durable. Went to rolex and haven;t looked back as it is a true tool watch (for my uses). It has not failed me in 25 yrs now (various models i now own). In the last 5 yrs I;ve had 3 unsolicited comments made about the watch (rolex) I was wearing (daytona twice, submariner once) - i don't wear it for the comments (and I'm often in situations where there are people with money). I just don;t care, I wear rolex becasue I want to - for me.

I’ve always worn my watches just for me, as well. I think most of us here do the same. We just love good quality watches, or we wouldn’t be hanging out on a watch forum. Also, I use mine to tell the time, and sometimes the date.

I think this number is way off, but understand the sentiment. It's something like 1% of the US population is dive certified. If that's directionally close (and feel free to extrapolate world-wide), with the overlay of who buys dive watches in general it's probably safe to say 99% will never be used for diving. Factor in how many are buying $10k+ "dive" watches and using them for something other than pool or shower, and that number gets smaller.

This shouldn't be surprising, though, and it's nothing to be bent about, as Rolex knows this and the majority of their watches today serve a different function than they did 30-50 years ago, especially - in the case of diving - with the proliferation of more capable dive computers.

I wore my Navitimer when I was flight surgeon in the Navy. And while I could have used the slide rule when I took navigation at API in Pensacola, I had a much larger similar slide rule that we used during exams. So did I wear the watch for its intended purpose? Sure I suppose. But really I bought it with my operational pay bonus because I wanted a cool watch to wear with my flight suit.

I also wore a Milgauss and an Explorer II during that time, but the Navitimer was my daily.

As a retired military pilot and currently a commercial airline pilot I always wear my BLRO while flying. I may traverse 5 time zones on one trip so it's value cannot be overstated.

Well what would be the " intended purpose" of a Datejust?Simply getting pleasure out of a great shiny watch you were able to buy? I do! Enjoying a fantastic piece of engineering movement running everyday? I do! Checking the time and date? I do! So yes, fits the purpose quite well.
