I'm headed to Rome myself in September, I plan on wearing my BLNR. I may put it on a different strap to tone down the Rolex effect.

Just got back from a Europe trip, Basel, some cities in Germany and Holland. Wore my Daytona most of the time. A couple of days I left it in the safe and wore my Apple Watch based on what I was doing. Keep it all low key and you will be fine.

Why bother? Just wear something you can lose or have stolen and easily replace, timewise and pricewise. Keeping up with stuff on vacation is no fun.

I saw plenty of rolexes in Rome when I visited Italy; our taxi driver from the airport was even wearing a sub and we had a nice conversation about watches on the way to the hotel.

To answer your question, go ahead and wear your watch.

Personally I don't enjoy having to keep track of "stuff" on vacation (expensive watches, laptops, nice cameras, jewelry, anything of value that is easy to steal/lose). Too many moments (airports, hotels, pools, crowds etc) where a loss could easily occur, so I tend to travel light, and with replaceable "stuff". Just my $.02

There may be a lot of locals wearing Rolexes or other expensive watches, but I would guess that locals are not the targets of pickpockets/thieves. Personally, unless the weather required me to wear a long-sleeve shirt that covered my watch, I would not wear a watch that I didn't want to lose.

Have a child who lives there. I just got back from visiting. Totally depends on what you are doing and where you are going. I think another mentioned the Trevi Fountain. If you are visiting that and the Colosseum and crowded tourist/iconic locations etc, do not bring your Rolex. If you are simply going from one great hotel to a great restaurant and then back into an Uber, you're fine. But that's not how most tourists do Italy and Rome.

Therefore, just leave it and be a tourist who enjoys the trip and does not worry. You don't want to be one who gets robbed or have a real disaster, something you will remember for all the wrong reasons.

As a side note, yes, it's true that many wear them. My driver wore a beautiful Yachtmaster II, but he agreed with what I just wrote above.

Have fun! What a city.

safe?

born and raised in Rome

you need to know the 'roman environment' really well to prevent yourself to get robbed when you do not see is coming
my lovely advice , enjoy the beautiful Rome , history , dining , shopping , etc with an inexpensive Casio watch and leave your Rolex @ home

You’re just as likely to get robbed in any major city in the USA… maybe even more likely here.

Most Rolexes you see waiters and taxi drivers etc. wearing in Europe and elsewhere are fakes. Obviously.

Wear a Casio, and enjoy a worry-free break.

I was there about three weeks ago and had no issues. That said, I was wearing a S/S Sub, and not flaunting it. And the fact that I am a older, but 6'5" male might help me a bit...

Near Pantheon, the heart of Rome Jun-Aug is where you’re gonna get robbed.

TRF posts have convinced me that it’s not safe to do anything with a Rolex.

Therefore, I think everyone should sell their Rolexes as quickly as possible. Preferably all at once, driving down grey prices and allowing me to buy more than enough watches to perform a rigorous test of the various “is it safe to” scenarios.

I’ll publish my results. I promise.

FYI, I’m wearing my new Sub in Mexico right now. I’ll start with that one while waiting for everyone to sell: So far, so good.

I wore a 16710 Pepsi to Italy two years ago (Milan, Florence/Tuscany, Rome) and all over France last summer. No troubles, FWIW. If it stresses you don't do it, wear something else. Just act like you belong where you are and pay attention to your surroundings and odds are no problems.

Was just there last week and visited most of the tourist hotspots ... which are very busy. As with similar locations the individual risk is low but it's not zero so it's a risk reward question about the risk vs pleasure of wearing which only you can answer really.

For me personally I avoid the risk on vacations by wearing something low key - in this case a Tudor and buying a Blancpain Swatch from the boutique there. I saw quite a few people wearing rolexes and one guy with a 5811 at Trevi fountain so plenty of people are wearing them. On the flip side one lady at St Peter's square had her wallet lifted while we were there so the pickpockets are definitely out and about.

I didn't visit any of the Rolex ADs but looked in the window of one - quite a lot of display pieces. I did pop into Panerai to see if they had any special editions but the one they had I wasn't that keen on - very friendly and a nice espresso tho!

This is the correct answer for all the “is it safe” threads.

Wore my 16710 while visiting Milan & the Italian Riviera back in 2014. I commented back then that the worst thing that could happen to your Rolex is to get knocked by another tourist wearing their Rolex.

Today I'd wear my Tudor BB GMT or Sinn 757 UTC and enjoy the sights, while maintaining social awareness, instead of always tryin to hide my wrist.
