THIS is exactly what's going to happen. He's going to be offered something that he didn't ask for and be made to feel grateful for it.

Glad my AD doesn't play such games.

Interesting, what initially looked almost like a sure call is getting loads of mixed reactions now.

I should mention that my AD is from Watches of Switzerland - so not necessarily a jewelry shop.

Any other thoughts? When I registered my interest with them I did let them know that I am only looking for an the OP Silver dial 36mm. Maybe telling them that I want this watch as a gift for my birthday helped? Who knows! Will probably see on Monday.

Ignore the naysayers. It’s going to be fine. On Monday you will have your beautiful OP36 silver.

If a shop assistant asked me to turn up at his shop at a particular time, the first thing I'd say is "what for?". It's a perfectly reasonable question, I would have thought. Why are you so scared of him?

I mean it could be a suprise, but usually if the AD has something you specifically asked for they just text a picture of it. I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like they are going to show you a bunch of stuff that's coming in to see if you'll bite. Let us know what happens.

I think some ADs like to surprise their clients. So that could be it. I like surprises. And I like seeing and talking watches. So if it fits into my schedule, I’d probably go. I’m not going right buy something I don’t want.

People are looking for reasons to be angry at ADs.

I'd be very annoyed if I went to the trouble of turning up to a watch shop like an obedient little boy, seemingly at the beck and call of a shop assistant, only to be "honoured" with an offer to buy a watch I don't want.

I'm not interested in surprises. There's an absurd power imbalance going on.

Well if you don’t like surprises, then ask. If you do, don’t ask. Where in the world is the power imbalance?
The way you describe it as weird. I have enough self confidence that I don’t feel offended at an interaction with a salesperson.

Why would anyone let a shop assistant tell them what to do? Rolex buyers seem to be walking on eggshells with these people.

This isn't about a powertrip. Staff are simply customer facing people. They are, by and large, regular people trying to make a living.

People come in all types. Just like the members here. Some act high and mighty, some introverted, and most are fairly normal.

What on earth are you talking about? The SA asked the person to come in so he could show him some product. In what world is that “telling him what to do?” The OP even seems a bit excited. If he really wanted to know he could call the SA back and ask.

If one doesn’t like surprises, or don’t want there to be any chance you’ll be offered something you don’t want, just decline. I’m really having a hard time seeing the problem.

I think people aren’t used to treating staff like humans if a request to come to the shop is met with this much vitriol and is seen as them ordering you around.

I have better things to do with my time than play mind games with retail staff. I need a pretty good reason to make a special trip to any shop. If that's your thing, by all means do it.

Rolex ADs seem to think that customers are beneath them in some imagined hierarchy. They are not, and it's common courtesy to tell any customer the reason for the appointment.

He did. “Come in and look at some watches.” If you don’t care to look at watches, decline. If you only want to see a specific watch, ask if that will be included. Again, not seeing the problem.

Some people just look for a reason to be angry. Seems like a crappy way to go through life.

You can go and look at watches anytime, no appointment needed.

I'm not angry, just exasperated at the reverential and subservient way Rolex buyers treat watch shop assistants. Respect is one thing, grovelling is another.

Who's grovelling...?

Concentrate on what you're doing, leave others to do as they please.

The OP didn't dare to ask the shop guy the reason for this appt because he "Wouldn’t want to sound desperate".

This grovelling is the thin end of the wedge which leads to artificial scarcity, faux waiting lists, and crazy secondary market prices. Other threads include advice about what sort of gift you should give to your shop assistant.

I said thank you to my AD, he said "no, thank you!". Sent him a nice email a few days later. If nothing else it makes him feel good and doesn't hurt to be more likable, especially as we do know that relationships matter in the Rolex game.

That being said - am I sending J Crew sales reps glowing thank you emails and making a trip to the store to build a relationship? Absolutely not. So I see where you're coming from.

I stumbled across an Hermes bag thread and it is the next level of what we're dealing with here... I almost felt gross/embarrassed for them - its just a bag - but stones in glass houses...

Hi everyone!

It was ‘sort of a call. ’ he offered me a black dial op 36mm but I kindly said I am after the silver dial one! Then we talked watches and he said that it’s very likely he’ll get my model in one of the next deliveries.

Super nice experience with the AD. See you soon guys and thanks for the answers!

The anticipation… is OP typing out an “incoming” post or a rant about an AD wasting time…?

Or perhaps trying to figure out how to upload a photo and we’ll be waiting a few days.

You are very generous on calling it a nice experience. ) I mean, 36 mm OP with black dial is a nice watch but not so special to make it a mystery.
When I was picking up my Daytona a week ago, my dealer had 36 mm Silver OP on a display, ready for purchase…
