It would sting more for me to give them another dollar.

Glad to hear the success story. I bought 2 new Rolexes & 1 Tudor over my lifetime. But have bought/traded/sold more than 2 dozen others with dealers in the secondary market.

Both pathways are worth walking.

i admit I got my Daytona gray. Of course that was when it saved me 5 digits vs. costing a premium. I don't feel a stigma associated with it, lol.

I will also admit that while I pretty much sit out the buying and selling of watches on TRF, I kinda like hearing of stories like the OP's. There is so much AD fatigue from the last number of years of many of them exploiting their position, that I feel a certain "sticking it to the man" joy when people decide to pay a small premium and go gray, or buy a non-hot model gray and save money rather than support their AD.

I did grey once. Not my thing, a bit of a stressful experience when you spend 10k on a watch. At least I got 34% off retail for a new piece stickered full set.

Long story short, I've been on the 'list' for a black SS Daytona along with a Tiffany OP36 (wife) for quite some time. I say this as somebody who has an extensive relationship spanning 5 years with my AD, 6 figure spend across watches/jewelry, gold models, diamond and two tone models for my wife, the whole nine yards, hardly any sports model Rolex. Quite frankly this lit a bit of a fire under my feet, so I reached out to a reputable grey seeing what kind of deal I could get cut for the pair. For years and years I always said I'd never do it, but I'm honestly just over it at this point. Came to an agreement (surprisingly good deal), and I'm getting fresh, September 2024 dated watches to arrive to my doorstep next week. Could have had them tomorrow but I'm in FL and got this crazy hurricane stuff going on.

I've now officially paid over retail for SS Rolex and you know what, it doesn't sting as much as I thought. Perhaps me recently paying over retail for my NOS 16600 was the catalyst to this, which made me realize, the time is more important than some extra money to buy what makes you happy. So never say never, as I was the textbook definition of somebody who said I wouldn't do it. I'm super content now with where my 'Land Sea Air' collection currently stands, will post some pics next week.

I do not consider the OP a hypocrite, I consider him an informed consumer who took a set of facts set out by an AD and made the best decision for himself and his wife. Great selection of watches and buying experience as discussed. The OP still researched and found the best deal possible and paid a market price for very desirable watches. As mentioned above, the AD fatigue is real and many who would not have consider going Grey have now made that move. Congratulations.
