Datejust, always safe to invest in?

I do not see watches or any of the other fine things I buy as investments.

I see them as purchases of things I enjoy, and I justify them further by saying that generally, they are a store of value in a generally inflationary world.

Cash is trash, so I want to split my net worth between the market which is designed to go up over time, and quality physical items that tend to be good stores of wealth long term.

In the long run I can't imagine any Datejust being an "investment." And I own one. However I would also say that in the long run the Datejust is always going to maintain a level of demand that outpaces many other watches out there. This will particularly be the case if you have all of the boxes, manuals, card, tags, etc. Given Datejusts are far more readily available to the spur of the moment walk-in buyer, it is going to be much less likely for the average Datejust owner to know they should keep all packaging/documentation and keep it in good condition than the owner of a years-long waitlist model would be.

Long way of saying: if you own a Datejust in a good configuration and you keep the watch and contents in good order, you will generally never have a problem selling it - if you are realistic about the price. It will retain a decent amount of its value - it won't gain value.

Echo what everyone says about enjoying hobby

My DJ41 126300 was £5450 in 2018 - a collosal amount of money really for what it is. Currently retails at 7300. Factoring inflation here in the uk “should” be about 6900.

These above inflation rises are unsustained imo and I imagine it’ll be below the equivalent new version in value now or very soon in the new year.

Buy what you like! And stick to something niche or more certain bet if it’s investments. White Milgauss? Seadweller 4k? 116520 Daytona? Anniversary sub? Maybe the hideous old air king. Who knows

DateJusts are great watches that are reliable and robust, and give their owners a lot of pleasure for decades. And if you do need to sell, will return a decent amount of money.

But they are not good financial investments. Buy a house instead.

Watches are assets.

They are illiquid + rise or fall on the market. All trade at a discount to full market retail value due to dealers wanting maximum margin.

For those reasons I think they are a collectible that you could monetize.

First rule of TRF: never use the word investment in the same sentence as watches.

Now, that said, the real lesson here is to not blindly listen to a 'friend,' or a 'guy on YouTube,' or any other self-proclaimed 'expert.' Do your homework. Look what pre-owned DJ's are going for, both by trusted and private sellers. From there, you can get pretty close to what the resale value of a DJ is.

Trust me when I say doing your own research will be the best investment of all.

Not necessarily a great investment. Nothing you can count on to increase in value, but there will likely always be a market for it and it can easily be turned into $$$.

Never buy any watch as an investment, even Rolex most will go down in value as time passes. Some will go up, a DJ with a rare dial or combination, but who knows? Which?
Buy it because you like or love it and enjoy wearing it and how it makes you feel.

Some are rare from the day of release, like a Celebration or Tiffany dial and will always be worth more but these are not the norm and are OPs not DJ.
Meteorite dials any, they are all 1 of 1.

That advice from the collector sounds like really bad advice. If you like watches you buy them for that reason not for investment purposes and unless it’s something that is really rare then you can hardly call it investment quality especially when you look at how many they churn out every year.
Maybe for your next watch buy something that sings to you and don’t be thinking about how much it’ll go up in value

If you have a different strategy with your money, and watches are a fun hobby…then cool! Me… Rolex’s are expensive, I’d like to think I’m not throwing my money away. Point is, you do you.
