Both are classic pieces, but the functions are different, so which do you want? Chrono? Time and seconds only?
The Speedy crystal is "plastic" and will scratch much faster than the Rolex. The Rolex feels more substantial on the wrist.

Kia ora,
I have both too. Quote:
If you can, get both at the same time. I managed it, I got them duty free on my last trip back home. Taking the discounts into consideration I got the speedy for almost nothing Btw, cool pix Masugu (straight) Quote:

I hear you. I was in this exact same position one year ago . I was actually leaning towards the Speedy, mainly because of the price. Finally it was my wife who suggested I try and get both. I'd ask the AD what kind of deal he'll give you if you get both at the same time. It never hurts to ask Quote:

I imagine choosing between these two watches is a common predicament. To me, they are the most iconic watches of each brand--they essentially look the same as they did 40-50 years ago, and they both have that mix of good, dressy looks combined with toughness for rugged adventures. One has been to the depths of the ocean, the other to space. Can't go wrong with either.
I wouldn't worry to much about price--you can get a like-new pre-owned Sub for the same amount as a new Speedmaster, so the real choice is simply between the watches themselves. Personally, I went with the Sub because I love the uncluttered dial, the symmetry of having no date, the incredibly light-weight feel of it, the impressive water resistance (300m and yet such a thin case!), and, I'll be honest, I love wearing a Rolex. When it slips out from under my sleeve and there's a Rolex for everyone to see, I'm just so damned proud of it! Having said all that, I wouldn't be surprised if a Speedy makes it into my collection some day. |

I agree that both are legendary...instead of stressing over 'this or that', why not think of it as 'which one first'? Seems you love both!

Speedy or Sub
I've owned both of these watches and both wear well and look good. I owned a speedy bought about 1972 for £125 GBP, the watch was stolen. I decided to replace the watch recently, the first one gained minutes in a matter of days and was sent back, the replacement wasn't much better and the sale refunded much to the credit and service of the AD. The Roles sub bought earlier this year appears to have no such accuracy problems.
The original Omega Speedmaster from 1972 was a credit to Omega, worn daily and the chronograph regularly used it was a tool, it was never serviced and worked perfectly and was extremely accurate only needing adjustment if it stopped, rarely. |

I just tried on a speedy pro at a watch store last weekend.
Wanting to buy it to back up my Daytona. I feel the speedy is very light... comparing the 2 watches side by side... i thought speedy just lack a certain high end feel to it. the dial and hands are white plastic looking... which is a minus in my book. I say go with the sub... |

Just visited both AD today, the Sub ND is only slightly more expensive than the speedy pro (in here), but the 50th and 40th anni are more exp than subs.
The subs nd is out of stock. They said Rolex is preparing for a price hike...... Either watch will stay in dry land no moon or the sea. I did try the three types of speedy variations: the pro(with saphire back), 50th anniversary(with gold seahorse logo) and the 40th anni apollo And it looks like the speedy smiles more Now the question is to get which speedy? all are using the 1861 calibre, only the apollo is using the hesalite crystal. |

I think the speedy is better looking and cheaper too. That being said I think the sub would stand up to everyday wear better. The clasp on the speedy is a little suspect and when i owned one i always questioned the water resistance.
Dont worry about the hesalite crystal on the speedy, it gives the watch an amazing warm glow and if it gets scratched (and it will) you can polish it out with polywatch from the comfort of your recliner. So if its a one and only everyday piece I would go for the sub, if its going to be in rotation go for the speedy. |

Is it me or is there a pattern of behavior begining to build up here ?
"I've had both" "I want both" "I have both" "I've got a Sub and am getting a Speedy" Seeing a pattern ? Simon

I never used to like the speedmaster but looking at these pics it grows on you, a hypnotic watch.

Speedmaster Pro.
To me, it does wear a little lighter than a sub on the wrist, but that just makes it more comfortable. I also love the manual wind aspect of it - gives you one more reason to fiddle with your watch. Has others have pointed out, the crystal will scratch, but it is easy to polish scratches out of it. I also like the fact that the exterior appearance of the watch hasn't really changed in over 50 years! |

first watch?
For a first, and maybe only, watch, I'd go Rolex. I sure like the looks/complications/bargain price of the Omega, but I wore my TT GMT (1974) until I gave it to a son two years ago.
Now, I wear my father's TT T-bird that was purchased in the 50's. This is no knock on the Omega. |

Six months ago I purchased my dream watch. I bought a new Sub ND COSC and love it. My next dream is a Speedy and will join the ranks soon enough.

Both are titans. I'd say Speedy by a hair. For me, the deciding factor would be commonality. There are alot more subs out there than speedys on the wrists of folks. PLUS, i love the retro cool domed crystal of the Speedy. Adds a distinct flavor.

I sort of have both. I was very unlucky with my new Speedy Pro 3570 which had to go back to Omega after three weeks of ownership, as a full wind caused the watch to speed up by 20 seconds in 3 minutes.
The Speedy is a lighter wear and is more comfortable. Going back to the Sub after the 42mm Speedy, the Sub seems smaller and almost less elegant. If you go for a hesalite model, you'll love the distortion effects created when you gaze in awe and wonder at your watch. Unless you really have a hankering for the Sub, I would recommend going for a Speedy first and then spend a lot of time in Rolex ADs checking out the Sub to see if you like it once you are used to the Speedy.

Both if you can. Here are mine, both from 1967.
If I had to choose, my head would say sub but my heart would say Speedy. I wear a Speedy 5x more than a sub. Cheers - Simon |

It was my thread and to him they were but to me they werent. The new Omegas are not mass produced junk but are they to compare as an equal to a Rolex? In my book not even close or in the same building.I own many vintage Omegas and wouldnt trade them even for a Vintage Rolex. The new ones are not the same my friend. Opinions were asked of opinions were offered. We dont have to agree. It was my opinion and opinions are like As@holes everybody has one. Its friday its a Rolex forum lets talk Rolex. At the end of the day you buy and wear what you like and to hell with everybody else

thanks for all the input....
of course, few years down the road, rollies will be added to the collection, this is trf isn't it? right now, i am more or less decided to go with speedy first....IMHO gives me a younger image now deciding which speedy to get......hmmmm i like the 50th anni, cause it comes with the original hand-winding movement plus the heftiness of the saphire glass..... |

Speedy-Sub
You´re right you have a dilemma right now....
I´m fortunate to have both and still can´t decide which one to put on in the morning. Right now, I solved it by wearing the Sub to work and use the Speedy on my free time. I think the sub is better for everyday use with sapphire crystal and waterproof to 300 meters on the other hand the Speedy looks great with the plexi and amazing dial. Right now I´m really into vintage looking watches and think the feeling of Plexi glass is really special the dial looks so much better. The "problem" with The Sub is that it is so perfect that it is almost boring. If you get them properly sized they both sits well on the wrist. My Speedy from 2006 is 148 grams, and the Sub from 2000 is 129 gram. I wear the Sub more often than the Speedy, but everytime I wear the Speedy I think, if "Rolex" were written on the dial it would be considered the perfect most beautiful watch in the world...and the price is just right/if you compare to the Daytona. Another concern is that I see the Sub more often on the streets, if you want to be a bit more unique, choose the Speedy! As you mentioned a real dilemma, the Sub and the Speedy are my favourite watches and I can´t really help you in another way than saying "In the end if you are into watches, you will probably get both. Go for the one that you can get the best deal on, and work from there. I´ll try to post some pictures...To inspire you. Good luck and let us now what happens. //Fred |
