I'm not sure there really is a Rolex "image." That being said, the least expensive Rolex still requires more disposable income than most folks spend on a watch. So, I think there has to be an appreciation for the workmanship, design and history of the Rolex watch for an individual to really enjoy owning one. And I suppose that person definitely fits the Rolex image!

I would hope that the only thing people need to have in common to be in the "rolex crowd" would be a appreciation for fine timepieces, but maybe i'm wrong!!

I like Rolex because of the company, the history, and the build/precision mechanical quality. Rolex watches do what Rolex says they they do, and they clean up really good during recommended maintenance!

As for me personally, I'm not all that "image" conscious, nor did I fall for any sort of target marketing. My work wardrobe consists of cargo pants, boots, and collared shirts or mock turtlenecks with a light wind vest. My weekend wardrobe swaps the pants for shorts and flip flops mostly, and generally I'll be wearing a hat of some sort. I drive a "modified" Toyota 4x4, like and keep a small collection of firearms, love getting lost in the middle of nowhere (and staying there for days at a time!), shoot pretty pictures, and appreciate craft beers and great Pinot alike. I don't aspire to be famous or powerful, but I'll do just about anything to ensure my family is comfortable and my kid recognizes, and has the opportunities I may have forgone or took for granted myself growing up.

I doubt I'm who the OP meant by "target market." :D In fact, I think the traditional definition of who or what makes a Rolex owner is largely overblown, based on my personal experience with people.

Hmm – my cheapest Rolex is more worth than my car, so I guess not
............ On the other hand – I’m good looking and extremely arrogant, so maybe anyways

Seriously; The typical Rolex buyer/wearer would never find a WIS site like this, so if you read this – You don’t fit into the Rolex crowd!!

I think the image thing sees two different ideals. The successful person with sophistication at the opera or the adventurous diving in the sea.
I can say that in my life "been there done that"

I'm a few months away from retirement. Does netting a trout caught on a fly rod with a Submariner on my wrist and an old lucky hat on my head make me fit the image?

I like your opinion on what that image is and whether you feel you fit into this bracket.
I certainly don't consider I fit into the Rolex image, not in occupation or financial status. It just I have no other vices apart for my interest in mechanic watches.

NOBODY who wears a Rolex is the type of person that would wear a Rolex.

When at work I am usually covered in oil or some other horrible chemical and wearing a boilersuit and boots.

For the other 6 months of the year I enjoy myself and the good things in life - including my watches, cars, bikes, vacations, good food and fine wine.

However, back home where I come from in the Shetland Isles, we have a saying that "You cant polish a turd".

So I doubt if I fit the image either.......

Comfortably retired - I guess that fits the Rolex image, as long as you are competitive in your fishing

BTW, Welcome to TRF!

That's a great poster behind you, and the wall clock reminds me of a PP World Time 5110.

Nope, not here either.

I'm just a loxmyth with a watch habit, and I'm addicted to reds!

Hands, date wheels...

Oh, and to TRF, too!

I tend to agree with the notion we TRFers as a rule tend not to fit who Rolex is marketing to.

The Rolex marketing strategy is focused at making their name synonymous with both prestige and accomplishment. As a company I imagine they would like nothing more than if every potential new customer believed that a) Rolex is better than every other watch out there, and b) you have arrived if you are able to purchase a Rolex.

I assume that these two things are not what drew most of us to the brand.

Anyone who has experience in Miami can say that it seems that everyone has a Rolex. And I mean from tow truck drivers to doctors and drug dealers to cops.

I have the advantage of working in shorts or jeans and a t shirt. I am in construction and do well by my wife's standards. I wear my Rolex to work and tell most people it's a fake because of the way people perceive you. You can't haggle anything because people WILL say "hey you want a discount and your wearing a Rolex?". And customers say "nice watch, you must be charging me too much." And I do business mostly with people that are worth $10mil or much more. I had a customer complain about a price and bring out the Rolex card. That guy has a jet and a 105' yacht!!!

Unfortunately that's the way it is here in Miami. ROLEX=RICH or at least "YOU DON'T NEED MONEY YOU HAVE PLENTY OF IT!"

To continue... When I wear my Panerai, 90% of people have no idea that it's an expensive watch. So IMO, Rolex does carry a sense of upper status.
