Daaaamn, I love that PP! (the watch) That is the ultimate dress watch. Goes great with the tie, too.

Please tell me that's not how you dress at the South Pole!

First time I have worn a shirt with it! That's six months.. and first tie on in over a year!
The watch feels awesome with a shirt and tie..and not a bad tie at that..

Think a shirt and tie would be pretty cool at the pole..

I originally took a look at this thread the day you started it, Steve...read through the initial posts and figured it wasn't worth my time. Noticed it was back tonight so I decided to give it a read and all I can say is WOW. Epic thread. Thanks for sharing your collection and your experiences with us. You make me want to do more with my life and buy an Explorer II!

Great post Steve, some of your comments and pics reminded me of a few things:

Dual time-zone (TZ) watches take the guess work out of TZ calculation especially when your fatigued. As you said one less thing to calculate/worry about.

Worked with a Russian AN-12 off East Africa. Yes all the crew attended the same flight crew training centre. It's mandatory to have a lit cigarette when doing any and all works in and around the aircraft.

If only Rolex made a world timer in the same vein as the EXP II 42. That is not in precious metal like their recent dual TZ watches.

All the best Jules

Know what you mean about smoking and planes. The last time on flew on a Ilyushin 76, the load master checked the cargo-barrels of aviation fuel- whilst smoking; then stubbed it out on the floor..

Add me to the list of those who were absolutely delighted by this thread. When anyone asks; what's a tool watch, or for that matter, what kind of people Rolex watches were *really* designed for, I'll have this to show them!

Thanks Steve!

Left to right...and expeditions/history. Notes.

1.submariner. Date. First watch bought. It's been to Iceland, Norway, greenland, South America. Had several services.
2.Deep Sea. No expedition history.
3. Sea Dweller. Antarctic.
4. Explorer 1. My dad's old watch. Been to Norway and Iceland.
5. Explorer 2. Norway.
6. Explorer 2. Black dial. Norway and Antarctica.
7. GMT 2. Antarctica. Engraved on back with South Pole enscription.
8. Explorer 1. (New) no expedition history other than UK expeditions.
9. Patek 5227. Last watch bought. Used as everyday watch. Already scratched in several place
10. Explorer 2. (New) White dial, default watch for work at present. No overseas history
11. Explorer 2. (New) Black dial, admired a lot. Going to Iceland this summer and greenland next summer.
12. Patek 5172g. With brown leather strap; looks better than the black. Only UK travel.
13. Patek 5070. Special occasions. My dad's watch.
14. IWC spitfire. A present from my dad when I got to the pole.

So that's that. It has taken me 27 years, and I would not buy another watch. Over the years I have had a Daytona and Panerias, yet in the end I have focused on the 'expedition' watches.

Steve.
Hey Steve,

In case you are still paying attention to this now relatively quite thread. One watch kind of stands out to me as having relevance but lacking use. That is the new EXPI. I was wondering why it is in the collection given that it doesn't seem to get used on expeditions. I'm considering one my self and was wondering on your take.

No infractions.

No ban.

The person who has your ear seems to be whispering bullshit into it.

Glad to hear it was total BS. I suspect he must be expediting about somewhere or other. I hope he hasn't fallen into a crevasse.

Indeed! We are getting back to same old. Hopefully the crevasse will spit him out!

I hope so too, and when it does spit him out his Explorer II will be unharmed and running perfectly.

Hi, lee...
The explorer one is 'the' rolex. It is the template for all the current sports and tool watches. Therefore if you are collecting its a must.
I would use it on expedition, but it does not have the date. I need a watch that can tell date and time without external checks.. But saying that you can check the date via sat phone/ diary etc...
It is a better balanced watch than the two. But the smooth bezel takes some hammer...
