We have federal elections every 6 years, so we do not always have them during World Cup. Today is a very unusual day

Brilliant. Penalties are absolutely fantastic drama and entertainment.

So long as it ain’t your team in the shootout.

This penalty kick thing was pretty entertaining. They should have done this at the beginning and saved me two hours of tedium.

Crushed. Spain has no attack and a goalkeeper who can't stop one of 6 penalties when it counts. Just crushed.

Crazy World Cup! Expect the Unexpected. Is Mexico going to knock out Brazil next?

Clear penalty for Spain was not given...

The Russian brought Ramos down, clearly seen on TV, and they didn’t have the backbone to call it...

Wow, another triumph for the well organised and disciplined underdogs. I had Spain in the sweepstake but I'm glad they are out, played like pussies and didn't try to win the game enough, Hierro showed himself a complacent amateur playing this passive style and mis-using Iniesta.

Draw has really opened up for England now, if we can only scrape past Colombia, don't care how we do it, but they are favourites now.

Well, Messi and Cristiano are on the way back home...Neymar next?

I would have said no earlier this week; but results have been VERY unexpected!

And he was not on it, touch wasn't there and Russians saw him coming. Cavani now my clear player of the WC so far.

Ramos and Pique. Unable to make a play on the ball. But Spain has no one to blame but their weak offense. Everyone played them the same.

Spain have no bite in their attack when Diego Costa is not his usual self. Just passing and passing endlessly. Russia defended very well but they are basically parking the bus and hope for the best.

In my mind, I was kind of expecting an upset because I saw Instagram pics of Spainish players laughing and joking during training, perhaps a sign that they are not taking the competition seriously. In football, under-estimating your opponent is the worse sin.

Based on the trend so far, ie, expect the unexpected, it looks like high chance Columbia will knock England out.

Totally unexpected and mind blowing result. This has been quite the underdog tournament so far.

Well we've suddenly had a few steps and if Mbappe can play like that again he'll be hailed as doing better than Pele! Only a very few offensive players are really lighting up now.

After what England did losing to Iceland in 16, we have to be the biggest underdogs left.

This style of play was fantastic when you had multiple players attacking and creating action. But they were just there to pass and that's it. That's what I was insinuating with my comment about this Spain looks so different.

Some beautiful stuff would be created in past years from all these passes. This game (year)? Just...nothing.......the passes were just that...they never really created anything. The same forward play could have been created like every other team does it.

Ha. It's funny that, on paper alone, for someone looking at the teams left this would seem like one of the softest WCs in quite some time. In reality, however....

They couldn't create anything because the Russian players were closing down all the space. And when they did sneak the ball through, the finishing wasn't there.
