I wouldn't unless I was forced to by circumstances beyond my control. I tend to hang on to things.

I sold my first Rolex, a Sub after recently getting my LV. I did regret it for a few days but don't think about it now. I guess I will regret it if the value of subs shoot through the roof in a few years time.

This has been my thinking......Some people have more money than Davy Crocket and they collect watches. For those people, a grail watch is a big purchase......but......its not comparable to the average person buying a grail watch (DRSD in this case). Its not very common for the average person to buy a watch of this value. For me the watch is an "Ace" in my pocket and it would be foolish not to cash in on it. Like many have mentioned, I could still buy a new Rolex for a fraction of what I could sell my vintage watch for. I do miss wearing a Rolex but I guess it doesn't have to be so expensive of a model. In the end, I would benefit from the sale and someone would have their dream watch (the only DRSD still under warranty btw). Its a win/win situation. The only thing I have to worry about is regret. A new watch will help with the feelings of regret I figure. Maybe not. But thats been my line of thinking.

That has been my exact problem - regret. I've even considered getting a replacement GMT but it's just not the same. However, I also see the other side of your dilemma and understand why its a difficult decision. Good luck.

Gave my first to a son (1973 TT GMT)-- would never have sold it. I now wear my father's TT TOG from the 50's.

No. A lifelong dream to own one - no way it's getting sold. I might just have it on my wrist in the casket!

Only had mine for a few weeks so far. No interest getting rid of it anytime soon, however, as it commemorates a career milestone for me. Unfortunately, no son to give it to down the road (yet). Hopefully, though, will have a wonderful a son-in-law to pass it on to someday.

Cheers, Chris

I had always wanted a "James Bond" Sub after it had a supporting role in early films. But after "GOLDFINGER" came out (Sean Connery's "Bond", White Dinner Jacket, lighting up the 6538 Big Crown), well I then noticed GMT and SUB ads in some magazines.

Years later I was offered a 6538 Red Triangle Sub (III'58), and purchased it in 1988.

For a myriad of reasons I won't go into right now, I had so much grief with it.

Then it sat for 12 years, then overhauled, then some addl.grief....

So I researched hard on the value, and took several offers.

When it went to a regarded and knowledgable TRF forum member who brokered a deal overseas, and I acquired my current pieces, I never looked back. I don't grieve over it, and have never regretted letting that one go.

I must say that tho I won't ever forget my 6538 and it will never be forgotten by me.

Mine was special too, i think I must have shed a tear or two when it was gone, but selling it allowed me to buy his brother, and then his sister and so on. I'm a bit flip crazy, or at least i was until the second hand market crashed

Mine was a special purchase almost 20 years ago. It represented a sense of achievement and accomplishment. I waited a long time to get it. I can't imagine ever selling it.

My first rolex was a stainless Date model, purchased from a dealer when I was 22. I wore it for 20 years, never had a problem with it. I wore it in the ocean, not realizing the crown was unscrewed, and it was flooded. I couldn't find any jewelry stores that I wanted to leave it with, so had to wait until I got back home. After sending it off to see what could be done, they told me it would cost $900 to redo it. The watch originally cost me $500 (back in 1982), so I let it go and just bought another Rolex. I hate I lost that watch, looking back. I've had about 7 Rolexes over the years, but that one, for some reason, just felt the best.

My 16710 GMT was an anniversary gift from my wife. If she thinks I'm worth a Rolex than who am I to argue. I'll keep it forever then hand it down to my son.

I'm not very sentimental and would sell my first Rolex to fund the next, but my AirKing is just so comfortable on the wrist that nothing beats it as a daily wearer. Besides, they don't make black dial AKs anymore.

I flipped my first Rolex -- a SS Sub Date -- for a Pepsi GMT. Soon after, I had a bit of regret. I used the regret as motivation to purchase a new SS Sub Date. In this instance, I don't need the exact watch to have the same feelings. I was fortunate that Rolex still makes the SS Sub Date. However, had my first watch been a gift, I would not have gotten rid of it. IMO, a gift changes all the rules.

For those of you who are considering getting rid of a gift watch, I would caution you to think long and hard about it. I recently gave my Dad a TT Sub that I owned for approximately 5 years. In all honesty, I would be pissed if he sold it or otherwise got rid of it.

Sold my first one, don't regret it at all, primarily because it didn't really mark an important event in my life or carry any real significance.
