The watch would never be taken off my wrist, for numerous reasons.

The response I gave is intended to be brash and, some may say, crass but it is exactly what is expected in the situation. There are no subtleties or niceties, you state your case and to hell with the consequenses.

"Thanks are you into watches?" would get you a smack in the mouth and then you loose the watch or at the very least a queer look.

Got it, the thread was basically to get to this point to tell us about the "rough place" you hang out in?

You could have said - for those of us that don't hang out in places where "nice watch" is a challenge to the size of their man parts, that a "thank you" would have gotten you shanked!
We could have gotten to the funny "knifed him", "watch gang" comments much earlier in thread.

Now, there are much more fun answers in my head but I will keep them there...since this is a public forum.

Nice Watch!

I can't understand why anybody would like to put them self in a position like that.

Why would anyone want to hang out at a place or with people where you feel you cannot act as yourself???

Now would have been funny. If you're as tough as you think, then this would work.

I guess I have to ask, since you seem to have the whole thing figured out and seem very resolute in your convictions, why you felt compelled to start a thread and ask us what we would have said in that situation?

I've never been to a motorcycle club, so I won't judge what you said given that environment.

Anywhere else, and all I would have said was "Thanks!"

"thanks"

That's what I would have said...

I would perhaps had added, "are you interested in watches?"

Price bomb, no.

Not sure if I would be in that enviroment in the first place but if hell had frozen over and i was then a simple thanks would have been the order of the day!

Maybe these guys would know

Which is about as seriously as I take a bunch of grown men with ego's like you saw in on that occasion!

you sounded like a guy who just wants to show off, to be honest. why go there? just say thanks and move on. if the other guy was not into watches, he will label you, and possibly others that own rolex, as someone who does not feel secure about him/herself and have to pricedrop like that. but what do I know, right? I've never been to a MC.

but I do know a more appropriate response would be, "thanks".

Unless

Unless I'm with friends or WIS : The watch is fake, $50 Bangkok knock-off.

With Hells Angels or Bandidos around, under the sleeve. They don't mess with people of their own local club but everyone is target.

I really don't have anything constructive to add to this thread, as it is now four pages deep with the proper thing to say, but no way could I let this one go by. Funny as hell!

Say thank you and proceed to ask if the person like watches... if he is a WIS... then engage in deeper conversation about watches... I don't think price drop is necessary.

The conversation about the watch was dropped and we moved on to other things.

I really had to say that, rather than try and fob it off as something other than genuine and expensive. If I tried to play it down I would have lost face.

I was there on my own for another hour.

A few friends arrived later we stayed for a couple of hours, got bored and left.

What would you have said?
I'd say thanks you a WIS?

So you're a finance guy that likes to hang with outlaw MC gangs?

The thread should be called "check out this badass thing is said to an outlaw biker"
