How shallow would it be to be bummed that your dad just passed down a watch that was not a Rolex, seriously. [/QUO start that special history with a rolex......almost brings a tear to my eye johny.

It is making me real sick when I hear people talk about passing on to future generations ... screw the thoughts of passing it down to generations ....once you are dead, what little control you had, is gone too... no one cares about your watch they way you do ... applies for all things in life thatcherish..... to all who are buying to pass it on to their sons or daughters , or for future generations: wakeup!!! ... the moment your heart stops beating, your watch is gonna hit the pawnshop faster than it took to embalm you ....well it is gonna hit the pawnshop while you are getting embalmed .... so live for yourself ... buy for yourself ... but your kids deserve something too, so get them a cell phone and an ipod ... ok fine, ipad...

Besides the fact that ...........

Besides the fact that I like almost everything about the Sub better that a PO the service from Rolex is miles above Omega in the USA. I don't know how Omega Service is in the UK or if you would have to send it to Bienne. I own a Seamaster Professional and I am not willing to deal with Swatch USA service ever again.

I know what you mean. I had always wanted a Rolex, but like the OP I also thought the cost was a little much. So, I started looking at other brands and was immediately drawn to Omega. At first, it was the Bond Seamaster, but then I found the Speedmaster Pro. Now what should I do? My heart told me Rolex, but my head was saying Omega. That's when the voice of reason stepped in (my wife) and said 'Get the Rolex. If you get the Omega, you'll just continue wanting the Rolex, so get the Rolex.' Since I was going home in a couple of months I called a few ADs in Auckland and managed to get a great discount on the Rolex, so I asked about the Omega. In the end I decided to get them both as it was the smartest move considering the money I was saving.

To the OP, like others have said, go with your heart. You only live once and if you want a Rolex and can afford it, get it. And when you get it, post some pics
So you picked up a new sub and a Speedy 3570.....man, you are set for life with that combo.

That's a very sad outlook.

I'd like to think that someone will hold my valuables somewhat a bit more dear than just straight to the pawnshop.

Interesting thought though.

I treasure my father's wristwatch and my uncle's wristwatch, but I recognize that it was just dumb luck on their parts (and mine) that I'm nostalgic that way and happen to share their taste. They bought those watches for themselves when they were much younger men, which in a way makes them more special to me.

So though I'm an exception to your rule, I still agree: get the watch you want to wear and enjoy. Besides, at this rate wristwatches may go the way of hats as a universal men's accessory.

Buy what you like and can afford forget the rest. I suggest you go into several AD's and try on several watches you like and would be thrilled to wear daily.Go home and sleep on it think about the 1 you cant get out of your mind.Go back and buy it wear it and enjoy it.

Possibly pretty good if someone working there is prone to dropping the merchandise. Just a thought.

1)Talk about brand recognition, Rolex is second to none.

2) When it comes to hobby & passion, logic does not apply.

My 2cents.

I honestly believe that you prefer the SS Sub. As a fellow watch junky, when I started hunting for my first "real" watch, I looked at many brands. By researching I came across WUS, and TZ, and was captivated by the Omega. Despite wanting a SS Sub since I was 10 (now 39), I, without inquiring, put the Rolex out of my reach due to price. I bought a 2201.50 PO with 30% discount, in Feb '10, before the $ hike. I then found TRF, and found that for 1500US, I could have had a pre-loved 16610 or 14060. I've pondered putting the PO on the sales list, but I like it, so I won't. There's room in my life for more watches, so I'll just get a Sub. Now I just have to figure out 2 things:1 date, no date, or LV w/extra blk bezel;2 if I'm just chasing the next fix to satisfy my addiction. I'm sure you all know about that.
