The DDII takes a while to get used to, but the original DD is great right off the bat!

IMO the older one looks better on your wrist!

Your posting and photos seem to confirm what I think about this DJ vs. DJII and DD vs. DDII situation. Rolex screwed up; they should have made the IIs in 39mm. It would be a perfect dress watch.

Given what you have shown, I say stay with the 36mm and hope that Rolex will see the error of its ways (not likely) and someday offer a 39mm DJ and DD.

I agree with several posters that you can pull of the DDII no problem, but there's something about the original that I prefer. It just seems to come together in a way that the DDII does not....

Also, there's this excellent point below about the "XI"!!

What was Rolex thinking changing the Roman numeral system?

36mm all the way. The DDII looks awful, the bezel just looks so oversized and I tried on the DDII and the watch is just monsterous, way too big for a dress watch. I agree with the other member who said Rolex screwed up and should've offered this watch in 39mm.

Otto, I think both are beautiful, and the DDII looks great on you. Not too big, IMO. But if it was me choosing, I'd go with the 36mm.

I think the 41 looks better, more masculine and a real sharp watch. It is a dress masterpiece after all.

DDII looks more maculine than the 36mm....but I have seen one in the wild and it does look big.

Otto, i think the larger DD looks nicer on your wrist since you have a larger wrist than i have and frankly esp for gold watch, larger seems more classy to me.
