I am just heading out for a weekend of boating. The good lume on the Marathons is one reason I like them. Their Marglow is pretty awesome without any special charging and the tritium tubes on the Navigator is almost blinding on a dark boat at night.

I almost bought one of the Maple Leaf versions. Since I had the quartz version with the Tritium tubes, I went for the SAR with the date magnifier. The magnified date reminded me of my Rolex.

My favorite watch so far has been the steel Navigator that I fitted with a tritium tube dial from a plastic Navigator. It wears nicer than the plastic version and is a bit lighter and slimmer than the TSAR or SAR.

I bought it on Ebay from a seller in Switzerland. I suspect he had a source of the original factory parts and was just assembling them. The movement, while still a, Ronda was different than the one the military watches had in the 1990's. I bought a couple tools on Ebay to open and close the case and a presto hand remover to do the swap.

Here it is in the middle of the picture, beside its donor watch. It was pretty well a straight swap for the dial. The was a bronze spacer on the Tritium dial that had to taken off and put back with the dial to be fitted to the plastic Navigator, but other than that it was pretty straight forward. The spacer was just a friction fit over the dial feet and slipped right off.

Here is the SAR on a 22mm Rubber Jubilee bracelet. I wanted to try the wider rubber to see if the watch wore better than on a 20mm. It feels great and I wore it all week while boating and swimming. I heading to the beach again today and putting the SAR back on.

This afternoon, I put the Marathon SAR on the waterproof leather Hirsch strap for a change. I then went for a swim in the lake a took a picture or two of it.

I decided to see how the SAR/Tsar would look with polished sides on the case. Not wanting to experiment with the SAR, I decided to use the TSAR for the experiment.

The first think I had to do was to get the bezel off so I could do a proper job of polishing the sides. It was actually pretty easy to get off. I used a case knife between the bezel and one of the lugs and it popped right off. The attachment is pretty simple. The case,just below the edge of the crystal, has a recess with an O-ring in it and the Bezel has a ridge. You press the bezel on until the ridge pops over the o-ring and then the o-ring holds the whole assemble together. The one risk is damaging the o-ring and having to find a replacement.

Once the bezel was off, I taped off the crystal and the face of the watch including where the bezel mounts. A few minutes of wet sanding by hand with 600 and then 1000 grit sandpaper got the sides pretty smooth. The next step was just polishing with a Dremmel tool and a felt buff about 1cm in diameter. I used Autosol as the polishing compound. If I did it again, I would probably find a couple more grades finer in the wet paper such as 1500 or 2000 in order to make it easier to polish.

There are still a few very fine pits that you can see in the final finish, but I think these are just defects in the metal. Maybe why the SAR have a brushed finish to begin with.

Here is a picture of it with a Bond Nato. I really need a light tent to get a good picture of it. I may try that later.

I wanted to try a smaller and lighter steel bracelet than the Marathon one I have. The SAR or Tsar just seems too heavy when worn with the Marathon bracelet. I went to a HK Ebay seller that I had used for my rubber bracelets and ordered a generic stainless steel bracelet that imitates an Oyster. It was $16 including shipping, so I figured I didn't have much to loose. Though not the quality of the Marathon, it is much lighter and feels better on the wrist. It also fits the watch case well. Below are a couple pictures of it on the Tsar.

The bracelet came from Ebay. Same seller I bought the rubber ones from in the spring. Item 330442978165.

Did you see my description of how the bezel is held on? Just forced over a rubber o-ring. The insert is another matter, as the bezel is solid and you have no access to the underside. Your solution to removing it was probably the only way, or at least the best way.

Yes the steel navigator dial is just as I received it. I also note that it does not say "US Government" and this version has no date window.

They are all Marathon watches. All quartz, except for the SAR, which is an automatic. Which watch or Photo are you referring to?

but before i do, can some one explain to me the abbreviations listed for these watches? i know that SAR stands for "dive, search and rescue," but confused with, for example, TSAR, , GSAR, CSAR and the others.

is TSAR quartz? thanks in advance.

It's a good watch but I wouldn't say it's "affordable" at over £2000GBP I could have picked up a Breitling or an Omega from a grey dealer.
