No , It ( 1603) ended up in the safe of a Luxembourg bank and the the cost to recuperate it was much higher then the replacement value .

Absolutely....
....Been with me a looong time---and I hope it'll be staying with me for an even longer stretch going forward. That's because it was my first Rolex and because it's a truly special watch. Post #7 in this thread has the details:

Traded my GMT plexiglass for a sub (cost £800). I regret it, but I could never have bought another otherwise. Cant have the best of both worlds!

Gone, only had it for a couple of years. I regret not keeping it for sentimental reasons. I was too young to appreciate that at 19 yrs of age.

I still have my datejust, admittedly, I rarely wear it. I keep it for sentimental reasons, but wouldn't be inclined to sell as SS DJs have little value second hand...

I gave away my very first Rollie, a Coke GMT to my nephew during his 19th bday last May. Received it from my uncle who passed away just early this year. Nephew begged me to "borrow" it, but decided to give it to him instead. I figured that I'm financial stable enough to buy one for myself :)

if you have a purpose for it, lets say hand it down then keep it.
but if you feel you have too much and hardly use it. i'd rather sell it. |

Still have my first Rolex, a L series DJ TT 36mm.. had it serviced and some parts changed at the RSC recently, and the costs came up to nearly 75% of the original price of the watch! Looks brand new now though, with 2 years warranty from RSC!

My dad purchased his Datejust in 1961 and then passed it on to me. It's been in my family 52 years and yup I still have it. It will eventually be passed on but for now I'm merely holding onto it for the next generation :).

My first, not my last, and a member of the permanent collection. And I do not keep it for sentimental reasons, nor because it is a good investment. I have it because it is a beautiful, reliable timepiece.

I still have my first, second, and third and I have no intention of selling any of them.
My first, the Explorer 114270: I really love this watch, even though since buying the DJ and the Sub, it's been somewhat ignored, but when I put it on for the first time in awhile, I'm just as taken with it as I was when I looked at it for the first time at the AD.

In the October of 99, my Business had a rough stretch. Rather than lay off my employees, or delay any pay checks I sold my 1980 No Date Sub. From what I remember, that watch was in wonderful condition. I sold it for more than I paid for it, so I was happy at the time. I was not a watch collector back then, it was my only watch. I wish I still had the watch, it would fit nicely in my current collection.

GMT 1984 B Two Tone Black face
I purchased my GMT in Amsterdam at Schipol Airport 1984. I've worn it almost everyday since then. Lately, was thinking about getting a another watch "Boccia" because of the bright colors, etc. Upon searching for watches discovered the RubberB band and Everest, realized I can play with my GMT. Waiting on a Everest Orange, have an inexpensive Black silicone "Taiwan" actually fits and looks very good (has endlink molded). Discovered George's endlinks and will go the leather route also. No pictures will eventually post (my first post here). Previously had Rolex Oyster 58' wind up, Universal Geneva moonphase, Omega Seamaster Chronograph (big thick one), sold last year on Antiquorum 2k.
Still own: Seiko Chronograph (alarm, stopwatch, date, 2 timezones, incredible watch), original Casio digital 1979, James Bond swatch, Mondaine dress watch, and my GMT, will never sell, pass on to my son who doesn't really want it. |
