Do You Need the Date Function?

My father just received a Milgauss (green sapphire crystal) for Christmas. It was a complete surprise - he literally couldn't breathe when he opened the present. It is a beautiful watch and I am seriously considering purchasing the same for my first Rolex. My only problem is my inability to remember the date. Have others tailored their Rolex purchase based on whether the watch has a date? I am going back and forth between the aforementioned Milgauss and the SS GMTII C. I seem to be hung up on the fact the Milgauss does not have the date feature.
