Again,.....
IF only Rolex would make the effort to create a decent size date wheel/window like the majority of ALL the other decent manufacturers - this would be a non-issue. I neither care for the cyclops or the miniature date window without it..maybe this year at Basel they will wake up in this regard....it is LONG overdue....and leads to threads like this... Rolex - r u listening?? |

I could do without the cyclops as well.

Out of interest what crystal was used on the Sub-C ?
And does anyone know if there is a white on black date wheel that will cross over to the Sub-C ? Sam |

I do like the look of the sans-cyclops ...under the perfect photographic shots.. but for us 'seniors' with failing eyesight, I need to see as much as possible... without having to put on glasses...and the glare is often a challenge to deal with....!!!

It came right off? Really simple? Hm. Well allow me to retort. I decided to give it a go. I've had success with brutal force before, but if this way to perform a cyclopsectomy really is as easy and sophisticated as some claim, then there's no need for violence. I even added alcohol to reduce the chance of failure to a minimum. Did it work? You be the judge:

How long did you wait to use brute force from heating it up last?
I think heating it up helped.

I seem to remember that someone over here used a soldering iron and (apparently) very easily removed the cyclops.

Seems like a good way to ruin a fine piece of art.

Great video, I just sent out my BNIB GMTIIC to get a new crystal without a cyclops. Will post pics when it returns.

My heat method does NOT work for Rolex crystals. However, a fellow WIS just sent me a video reply to my video on how he did it on his Rolex Explorer II. Worked like a charm for him. And now for a disclaimer: Proceed with caution -- you could ruin your watch. here's his video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8-33UbhuyE Cheers, Ross EDIT: I see that this video has been posted in the thread already -- woops! It's now linked from my video, so hopefully more people will see it, too. |

Okay, my turn.
The idea of putting a torch to my watch did not appeal. I placed it flat on the workbench, and aligned it against a soft wood plank at 9 o'clock. The with a *sharp* wood chisel applied to the outer edge of the cyclops (at 3 o'clock), one quick small hit with a hammer and it was gone. Cyclops flew away (found it on the floor, not one mark on it) The tiny glue residue went with some generic paint thinner and a cloth. I am happier now: |

Looks like I need to get brutal with this thing.... Quote:
Your vid inspired me to try. I heated it up w/ a hairdryer, then put a soldering iron tip to it....nothing....tried it some more...nothing....then went to the micro torch....didn't budge. I'm currently soaking an aftermarket crystal in acetone for 2 days, but so far no luck there either. It's time to get the hammer!! |

Took mine off my boschett last night with a hammer and screwdriver. I figure I should try it on something less expensive first.

WTB: new crystal for submariner
Well, the " chisel " and hammer method worked well for me. Hard to smack such a beautiful watch. The crystal cleaned up well with " easy off " oven cleaner.

I think the cyclops screams Rolex which is the last thing I want my watch to do. Your Sub C is amazing, nice work. I did not think the Sub C could get any better, you proved me wrong. I think the new subs are the best subs ever, huge improvements over the previous models, now I just need to see what happens at Basel to see if I will remove mine or buy a no date sub.

So true! But what about the maxi dial, updated case, and glide clasp? I think we need a new Sea-Dweller...or maybe it's just a Sub-C without a cyclops |
