Yes.

The slimmer case & more streamlined appearance of the last Sub is more refined IMO (dress watches are slim, smooth and demure...not bulky & brash). Not to mention the non-Maxi markers seem more subdued and hence better suited for suits (yes, pun intended) than the SubC.

But in the end, there's no doubt any Sub is the most ideal watch if you're looking for a 'one watch that can do it all'. I can't think of any watch but the Sub that can be thrown into any setting and still look at home; day, night, dry, wet, hot, cold, country, city, formal, casual...it really can do it all & that's why I've got to believe the design has endured for so many decades essentially as the same formula.

We live in a time without much regard for decorum. Blue jean makers have re-tailored some of their lines so that they can be worn around the waist but still put out that "pants on the ground" look. In this context, the question of what is or is not appropriate can only be thought of as a situational judgement about what decorum requires. And in modern times, that means any reasonable watch is appropriate for any occasion.

But there's a difference between a watch that's reasonable enough for dress (such as Submariner), and a dress watch. Sport watches, such as a Submariner, are particularly appropriate for casual wear. Normal watches, such as a Datejust, are most versatile. Dress watches, such as the Cellini line, which are particularly suitable for dress occasions. Of course none of this matters, but in my view there are these three general categories of watches, and it's not hard to tell which kind a Submariner is.

The Submariner is not a dress watch. It's a sporty watch. I think I'd take a dim view of someone who expressed that a Submariner is inappropriate for dressy occasions. But in my view if your intent is to dress up, this would be more appropriate than a Submariner because, other considerations aside, it is at least a dress watch.

My advice...I'd go with the Indiglo first. It fits in, and that makes it classy. A Rolex could be more classy I guess, if it's one that fits in.
