Apple is already behind with those 3.5 screens. OK Retina is fine but so is AMOLED technology. It was about time they moved to 4 or over inches but they did not.
Well i hope iphone 5 will live up to demanding consumers' expectations. I cannot fault Apple's marvelous iPhone on other major technological departments (whether it being hardware components, OS or apps, they really do great there) but those screen sizes are disappointing if you are making a so-called smartphone that is also targeting demanding professionals that need the extra screen. Perhaps that would mean problems for developers and compatibility of existing apps with newer screens with higher resolutions but what the heck it is time they moved on. 4.3 inch screens from Samsung are well ahead. Also 4 inches have existed for 2 or so years. What are they waiting for? I am not upgrading which is good, as it will save me some bucks towards the purchase of a DSSD (or so i dream). |

I'm very happy with this release....it vindicates my choice to pick up the galaxy s2 recently and leave the iPhone 4 in the drawer.

The rumorsphere caused the disappointment. Let's frame today another way: The unquestioned sales volume, manufacturer profit, user experience, customer satisfaction, application experience, and application developer profit product was slashed in price by 50%. A new product was introduced at the old price with a dozen major performance improvements and an entirely new user interface ability. Network performance was dramatically increased, and additional US networks were added. Sales figures were released beyond anyone's expectations, and the tremendous demand for he product should only be increased by these announcements. Only by "Apple Standards" of every single announcement as an absolute world record grand-slam home run everytime can this be a disappointment, and the market is reflecting that. 10/12 will bring iOS 5 and iCloud. 10/14 will bring days-long lines and an understanding that a fully-integrated voice activated digital assistant is NOT the same as "speech to text". Earnings will be out in two weeks. Would you bet that AAPL iPhone sales and company earnings will fail to meet expectations, meet, or exceed? |

i think i might upgrade... if i can get a fair price for it, i think the cost to upgrade is minimal. esp since my carrier gave me a kickarse deal when i signed up, im already in front.

Apple may be a great company, but this time they didn't deliver the goods.
The 3.5inch screen is not just yesterday's hardware it's two years ago hardware. Maybe their dispute with Samsung regarding intellectual property has impeded their ability to source appropriate displays. The Samsung Galaxy SII super amoled display is a quantum leap in quality over the iPhone 4 display. But this has been a known fact for years now. Oh well, the Android market is the largest mobile phone market in the USA......and by the looks of it, it just got a heck of a lot bigger. That's all.

I think they witheld the release of I5 because it will be a sure winner. This will asure good results long afther Jobs has gone maintaing investor confidence in Apple for the next 2-3 years. Whatever will happen afther I5 no one knows.

Warning: biased Apple-hating drivel.
I predict this is the beginning of the end. Apple laid an egg, pure and simple. Microsoft hit a home run with Mango, and Google has ICS riding in on the unending Borg-like onslaught of fast 4G phones. Apple has never had such a strong set of competitors to the iPhone so this meager update is quite a gamble. Regardless of how sales are, you have to wonder why Apple couldn't deliver more. It has been more than a year since the 4 launched. Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk |

Well my contract is up and I'm not convinced. I would like to replace my 3gs, and will. The better camera alone is compelling. Should I get the Samsung Galaxy S2? Cost is not a consideration, though I think they all cost about the same anyway.
What's the best of the best? My wife has a Droid X. It's fine, but I don't love it. I'm not an Apple fan boy, but I am getting an iPad2 as a work expense. I don't really need everything to "talk", but it might be nice? I just want to use the ipad2 as a mobile office space and use it to organize articles, lectures, etc for teaching. The phone is just a bonus, for some on the run email, surfing, etc. I also use it as a camera for some random quick shots. I wish the 3gs camera was better, I would just keep it, but it's got to go. Recs? Recs for something soon to drop? I've only really been following apple, and most of my colleagues are apple fan boys.

It took me a day to get used to the new OS - but now I have I look at the iPhone as dated - It's still the "simpler"/user friendly OS....but I would whole heartedly recommend the Samsung

I've been waiting for a couple of years to get rid of my Blackberry for an iPhone so I will likely get the new one. I am surprised that the screen size didn't change but so be it.

Like others, I think Apple dropped the ball with the 4s. An internal spec bump is one thing, but when it takes 16 months to release a phone that is not a major upgrade, that is a letdown. Now, I have no doubt millions will line up for it, but how many of those will be people who currently have the iphone 4?
If you still have the 3GS and your contract is up, why wouldn't you upgrade? If you just got a 4, the spec upgrade really isn't a reason to upgrade now. If apple doesn't release the iPhone 5 by wwdc next year, I see problems. Sure, the fanboys will continue to buy them but android and windows phones will be coming out like crazy. If the iPhone 5 doesn't have LTE, a 4 inch screen(min) and another processor upgrade, I know I will be headed to android.

Though disappointed I think the demise of Apple is ridiculous. The same was said when the 3GS came out and to some extent the iPad 2 - it ended up just as difficult to get either at launch and the 3GS is still the second best selling smartphone behind the iPhone 4 to date in the USA!!

I am sticking with my iPhone 4, will upgrade to iOS 5 and sit tight for a while. I was hoping for a new form factor. I was liking the aluminum body and teardrop shape rumors. That would of pushed me over the edge to upgrade. Anyway, I've never been more happy with a smartphone then with the iPhone 4.

I'm pre-ordering as soon as its available. Its a free upgrade from the 4!
The only iPhone I paid for was the original. Every one since then has been paid for by selling its predecessor. For those that don't think the 4S isn't much different from the 4, simply compare the speed of an iPhone4 to an iPad2...enough said. The 3GS was an improvement over the 3 and the 4S is a big improvement over the 4. If you have anything older than an iPhone 4, you're working with a dinosaur |

People people ... let's not lose perspective here ... the iPhone 4 still rocks, except that its price is 50% of what it was .... and for the same 199 now you get double the memory, a great super fast processor and a few other goodies ... there's iOS 5 as well.
I am still a bit disappointed but c'mon ... A new form factor would have been nice but it's not the end of the world (or Apple for that matter). It will come sooner or later, what's the big deal ....

Honestly, I don't understand what the big fuss is about. To my eyes .. the iPhone 4 / 4s are very nice and solid design wise.

To be honest I cannot understand why Apple continues to be flamed so much!
They revolutionised the mobile phone industry with the iPhone and they have only gone from strength to strength, just like with their groundbreaking iPod line. We're already spoilt with what there is out there in terms of technology, that some things are just never enough for people. When the iPhone 5 is announced, people will sit up and take notice as I can see that being another "game changing" device. Until then, I think that the iPhone 4S is a great device and will sell in incredible numbers. |

I don't think the demise if apple is anywhere in the future. I do think that only releasing 1 if your biggest selling product every year isn't the best method when other companies are coming out with new phones every month.
They seem to have verified that every other year will only be an internal spec bump followed by an all new phone the next year. Why buy the 4s when a better, all new phone will be out next year?

Most predicted more than 1 phone yesterday. Hell, some went as for as to suggest that 3 were going to be shown (simmer lighter iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 5)
All Apple did yesterday was exactly as Apple had done in the past, they did an incremental update of their current phone just like the 3G, to the 3GS, but I do think that the 4GS is a better overall upgrade coming from the 4 than the 3GS was coming from the 3G. The only way we are going to see more iPhones, and especially more than one at any given time is if Apple decides to change their policy that they've applied to most of their product lines throughout the years. What they have going for them in terms of support for just a few devices, where they make the product and the software for it, goes against them in terms of their limitations to branch out and get different variations of the iPhone out there. Personally, now they should just be selling the iPhone 4 and new 4S, not the 3GS still I'm afraid. |

How could anyone expect Apple to release an "inferiour" Iphone (4S) and an all new Iphone 5 at the moment ??
The 4s will be used as test platform for the new 5 to be released in about 6 or 9 months . I'll keep my ordinary 4 and wait for the 5 this time . Ok I5dual core chip will speed up the current 4 and 8 mega pixels camera along with the upgraded graphic capabilities does improve a lot from the current 4 , but not enough to make me spend that kind of money when I have a perfectly fine 12 months old Iphone 4 . |
