I made enough money to look for a replacement for my Bulova, and I learned that Rolex was attainable. Then I found this forum, and got edumacated. So, I bought a Rolex off of Ebay. Since then, I've learned much and expanded my horizons to other wonderful watches.

I just like the looks. I don't even bother to set the time or date, or even wind mine.

If you shop around and educate yourself on watches, you'll find that in terms of quality, Rolex excels. At the Rolex price point, you won't find terribly many competitors offering in-house movements (though Nomos and Fred Constantine are out there for your perusal). Other watches at comparable prices tend to have base Swiss movements (ETA or Valjoux). That's WIS talk, though. In sum, the fit and finish in a Rolex is exceptional, especially considering the fact that they are mass-produced, and the brand always grows in value (not that watches are a good investment tool -- they aren't), so at least you know that you can likely get out of it what you put into it.
I know a very successful and aged dude who has owned tons of watches over his lifetime, and from his perspective he tells me that ONLY Rolex and Patek have always made him more money than he put into them. I've only owned Rolexes (from his list), and I can say that I have always sold them for more than I bought them for -- and even considering services, I've always made a profit, even if very slight. |

for me this is too broad a statement as there are plenty of Rolex that I'd NEVER wear ( nor can afford as I'm thinking of those really bling one's that are crusted with diamonds )..... but, on the other hand Rolex are a company with so many first's and so much history and craft watches that are pure classics......
So why Rolex, for me it a watch with 'tradition' and a range that means there is something in there for everyone. |

It is a symbol of the dedication, hard work, sweat that me and my family has endured to get me where I am. We have been through a lot and having the watch says, "we did it...we made it."

My first Rolex was purchased on vacation in Grand Cayman. I had my eye on a PP Calatrava when my wife spotted "his and hers" Presidents so I ended up with this:
In 2003, it left my collection and it was not until 2008 that I ventured back into Rolex to fill the GMT niche in my collection with a 16570 EXPII. I searched the spectrum but the classic tradition, plus the fact that the Cyclops could be removed, influenced me to do this: My only issue was that it wore small compared to my other sport watches so I flipped it for this one: A beautiful watch but a bad mistake so I flipped for this: and this: Having never been a Sub fan, and especially not the SubC, the SD was my grail Rolex sport watch and these two served my purposes as I anxiously awaited arrival of the new 42mm Explorer II. The search for a white dialed dress watch moved me to flip the GMT Master II for this: Then in November, I decided to let the SD go as my Planet Ocean Liquidmetal LE had moved it out of rotation and this one had finally arrived: And BTW, a good friend sent me this vintage 6050 bubbleback for Christmas 2010: So this, you might say, is my Rolex story. I've worked hard all my working life. House is paid off, zero debts and it's time for me to enjoy some of the finer things in life that I did without in earlier years. A Rolex to me, is a reward for my hard work, it just makes me feel good to wear one. Why Rolex over Omega? Rolex watches just seem to be more attractive on my wrist apart from a Moonwatch which is on my wish list. Why Rolex over AP? Again, AP's are too big on my wrist. Why Rolex over a PP? 'Cause I can't quite afford the model I like lol! But a PP is on the horizon at some stage! :-)

Easily the most comfortable and durable watches I have ever worn. Nice to know there is a well established service network if I ever need it.

The DD has always been an icon of success and accomplishment to me. I always wanted one and knew one day I would have one. It feels great to wear and I get tons of enjoyment looking at it. Once I got the DD I was hooked and wanted more Rolex watches. I am starting to look at others manufacturers but my heart loves the Rolex brand.

Because its the instigation of the proclamation and the jubilation mixed with incredible consultation of indignation. Thats why its an easy choice.

I think initially it was my dad having one that made an impression on me, especially that he was not a quote in quote, professional, and worked with his hands, it was one of the few worldly possessions he owned, and for a man that lived frugally. He only owned one, still works today, 55 years later. This for me, deepened the mystery of it, as not just a typical material item, but something of value, integrity that could be passed down.

I chose a vintage 5513 because it's the only watch that I cannot shock the indices off of.
I've popped indices, hands, and logos off of almost every watch I've owned previously. I do have to watch for popping the lume out of the hands though, which I did manage to do on a different 5513. Rolex is a tough watch, no wonder why they call it the "Texas Timex". |

First drawn to a Rolex in my early teens, attracted, riveted in fact, by the Cyclops eye (something that still fascinates me, an almost unique Rolex feature). On getting my first Rolex, 16030 with Jubiklee band, it was the beautiful, sculpted finish and, especially, the ploished sides of the case and the bracelet.
It was only then that the learning process started, the accumulation of catalogues and price lists (pre-internet age this was), the lusting after the 16570, its eventual purchase leading to more learning about Rolex innovations in watch making (some of it, no doubt, hype but a lot of it quite true) AND the remarkable durability of that 16030 (still with me, in its 27th year and to be "sent in" next week for servicing, when I collect my 16570 back from Rolex Bombay. With the arrival of the DJ II TT last month came more appreciation of the sheer presence of the watch, its "perpetual" smile for me and the Rolex Times special number which describes in detail how the watches are made, the materials, the tooling, the technology and so on. So, the brand has just grown on me, by a process of learning and using. I am now thinking of the Exp 1, may be in a few months. And I forgot to mention the heads it turns, not only here in India but even in the UK or elsewhere. But that is incidental. I wear my Rolexes to please myslef, not others! |
