ChrisCraftJack you said "They can't do what a Omega can and cost more." Sure." What did he mean by that? It depends on what model but most of them can do just the same and some more and some less. Also it depends on what you need and what you appreciate. Like for me, I love the daytona, but all the functions of it other then telling the time is more or less useless for me, same with an Omega Speedmaster. I much rather want a date. Same with a day-date I love the look of it. But the day function is also useless to me, I always remember what day it is. For me what is of critical importance is that it got a good movement, is waterproof (at least 100m, yet I never swim deeper then 2-3m) and that it can handle lots of beating, (904L steel) and lume. Date would also be a great bonus but no need. The rest I can do without and is only a bonus, not important.

I fell for the history of the Submariner and of the people that are associated with Rolex throughout the history.
TRF was also a contribution since i also wanted to discuss watches.

I wanted timepiece that would be a life long companion, that would accompany me and grow with me, through thick and thin, through better or worse.
So to last and endure my life journey and withstand everything it throws at it, it had to be well-built and tough. And just like me, this companion needed to be tough, reliable, of exceptional quality, and ridiculously good looking (eeeeergh???!!!), no matter what, no matter when. And then after that, let it be a life companion to my son, then his son, then his son, and so on. And that's why I chose a Rolex Submariner. |

I ended up buying my first Rolex Datejust 16220 (no-holes-in-the-lugs) because I liked its look and feel. After a while, I got into Tudor (Oyster Case Date+Day models) and I now like them better than Rolex because they offer so much quality for the price - and they tend to run with better accuracy, too - as I'm trying to question/show/discuss in the thread below:

its better than cash in an account:
1) more secure: much harder to pay with a rolex than cash at a bar and it holds value better than cash 2) it yields more $ value of enjoyment than i would get $ interest from cash in the bank 3) its a lot more satisfying to put that $5k/$10k on your wrist than have some extra numbers on a monthly statement |

My first Rolex that I bought was Datejust in gold with President bracelet. It was 2000, I always wanted to have DD President, so I sold Datejust also bought some years later DD President. For me, the most beautiful Rolex is DD President, that have been manufactured.

There are things I appreciate about Rolex now, that I didn't when I bought my first one. Things like the history, durability, tradition, etc. The first watch that ever got me interested, no ... infatuated with watches was the Rolex GMT "rootbeer". That was the first Rolex that I really noticed, even before the Submariner. The perfect size, shape, bezel, dial, etc that became the benchmark for all other watches I owned or aspired to own.
After owning 30 or so dive style watches over the years and pretty much losing money when I flipped them I finally decided to give Rolex a shot. I picked up a Pepsi GMT II at a steal and realized then what I had been missing. I followed that up with a mint preowned Seadweller less than 6 months later and now I am set. Both watches have significantly increased in resale value as well. In short, I wear Rolex because it represents all of the physical characteristics I like in a watch. I've owned and still own Omegas, and they have been through everything that my Rolexes have. They have the same accuracy, the same quality, and are every bit as durable. The difference is, they just do not have the same look that I love. Honestly, for me it's not about the name. If my GMT had Omega or even Tag Heuer on the dial then it would still be my favorite watch. The rest of the things (resale, history, tradition) are just lagniappe. |

I always new that Rolex made a very nice watch. I appreciate them as a mechanical work of art that you wear on your wrist. I had a great IT job in a brokerage firm at the time and we were well compensated. After a nice bonus, I decided to treat myself. 1999 into 2000 was a very busy year with all sorts of work projects, many late hours, alot of paperwork for the securites and exchange commission for Y2k.. I decided to treat myself with part of the bonus money. Since I liked James Bond, I decided on a 14060 Sub. I liked the Subs as I think you can wear it with just about anything. It looks just as great with a Tuxedo, a nice suit or jeans and a T-shirt. I wore it every day for 12 years after it. Since I recently had it serviced, I now swap it with wearing my G-shock. I'm trying to not beat it up as much as I did before. It's a quality watch that I bought because I always wanted one. I bought it because I like it.

I bought my first Rolex, an Air King, because I wanted a good, no frills, reliable, self winding water proof watch. The next nine, Subs and GMTs because I like them. Isn't that why we are here on a forum devoted to them.

I bought my Rolex after six years of yearning for one. In those six years I also bought a Planet Ocean - my reasoning was that Rolex would always be too expensive for me, so I should 'make do' with an Omega. It didn't work, and three months ago I bought a Rolex. For me, and for many people I'd imagine, the wait is what makes the watch special, and I know that I'll have this watch - my very first Rolex - until the day comes when I pass it down to my offspring. Hopefully it'll serve as a fitting reminder that if you want something badly enough, no matter how long it takes and how hard you have to work, you can do it.

Why did I buy a Rolex?
You sound like my wife! Although now it's, "why did you buy ANOTHER Rolex?" and, "why don't you buy a Panerai so I can wear it?" My first, at age 23, was because at that point I had an appreciation for mechanical watches, and Rolex was something to aspire to. Wish I had it back (a used Sea Dweller 1665 that cost me $855 in 1989.) Ah, the good old days... |

Well my Rolex is the first mechanical watch I've ever bought but when I purchased it it was merely because I liked it, I thought it looked very nice and although I'm not the type of man who only buys the brand there are a few names that I got to like after learning about them.

Joined this forum nearly 3 years ago but stayed away from buying a Rolex because I didnt want to be THAT guy, but now Ive bought other brands Ive come back to Rolex and esp fallen hard for the new ceramics and have now bought one and switched my next two planned buys from other brands to Rolex. Try as I might I just couldnt resist the combination of heritage, name and quality.

One of my best friends is loaded. Self made man and after school finished at 18 he went out on his own against the advice of everyone (including me).
He's now very wealthy. His watch collection is just a diamond Breitling and a Franck Muller that is diamond encrusted again. He does a lot of stupid stuff with his money. For example showering a stripper with £20 notes. Now while I don't agree with his taste in watches or his disregard for money, there is one thing I like about him a lot. Whenever anyone questions anything he does like "why did you do that?" or "why did you buy that ?" he has a simple answer, "because I can". Tbh he says it in quite an arrogant way but the concept behind it is one I like. So in answer to your question. Because I can. |

Three-step approach...set goals, achieve them, buy watches...repeat process...
