Ultimately it depends on your wrist size, right?

Big watches, to a certain extent, are not a fad. The bigger watches will always appeal to a certain type of person. Possibly a person who likes to be noticed.
The bigger watches will also be preferred I think by people within a certain age demographic who's eyes can't focus in like they used to (people like me). That would fall in line with the 'Boomer' generation. As the Boomers start dying off then the current spike in the desire for larger watches will go with it. But the desire for larger watches will always be there. |

Me too. If PCLs on sports models, RolexRolexRolexRolex..., fat cases, and $8,000 Subs are what we mean by "change", then I'd rather they go back to how they were.

Is it possible to like both small and large?
Lets remember that this large watch trend didn't start for rolex in the last few years with the maxi case. They've been bumping up the size of the date just for the past 40 years. Would the so called purists like 34mm watches? If so they must have really hated it when they grew to 36mm. Wear what you like. |

I suppose I should comment after owning many higher end brands over the last twelve years...when we talk bigger often we refer to the size of the watch/case only and not necessarily the size of the face ie: increase in dial legibility (the newest EXP II an exception). I have worn larger watches than 40mm but none have been more legible than a well designed, uncluttered dial/face set up. My wifes 36mm Exp I is certainly more legible at a glance than the DSSD and or the Daytona I owned. In terms of heft (that feeling of something substantial on your wrist) again wearing a 262 gram 18kt timepiece quickly became uncomfortable as did 'trying' to make a thick cased watch feel comfortable -- they in the end never truly *disappear* on the wrist. I wear my 16570 and my wife wears her 14270 24/7 in the north and through an extremely active outdoor lifestyle -- often dressed in multi-layered clothing. These watches are supremely comfortable with the more legible dial going to the 14270. So if you reside in a warmer climate where cuffs of tight fitting jackets/winter gloves are a non-issue, or you do not wear your watch while physically active -- then a larger watch could work for you. Ideally a larger watch should mean a clearer, easier to read face -- but that it not always the case. One more thing: I am 6'1" / 230lbs and would feel very comfortable wearing an Explorer 14270 (with an extra link) if I did not own the 16570.

I never understand why these size threads always get so out of hand. Size doesn't matter, it's how you wear it.

I originally passed on Rolex because of the size and purchased a breitling. However, my second and third purchases were rolex. I love the size of the sub and now I am thinking of getting a second one. Also, will probably pick up a SD in the next few years if I can swing it. I hope they don't change a thing.

I agree; even the DDII and DJII don't have any appeal to me. A part of me feels that they aren't exactly genuine; even though I know they are. I guess I'm still living in the 80s when I first got to know the brand.

Interesting discussion. It seems to me that Rolex takes it's own approach to how its watches should look and what size they should be. They don't seem to follow in much of anything, especially in terms of fashions trends.
When I first became interested in Rolex a long time ago, most of the line was relatively huge compared to other brands. But this is what they thought their watches should look like. All these decades later many of these models are still in production and except for minor evolutionary (rather than revolutionary) changes, Rolex has stayed true to the original vision of the proper size and style cues for these models. I'm not sure the "average" buyer getting older thing means watches will get bigger. Watches have been around an awful long time, why would that trend just be happening now? Perhaps larger watches are here to stay and perhaps not. But even if they are, a 40mm Sub or GMT is not a puny timepiece and there is much more to wrist presence that just diameter. There is also the possibility that at least to an extent the large watch thing was influenced by the lady's fashion trend towards wearing oversize or men's watches, this causing men to want something larger than what women were wearing. If the lady's fashion trend reverses, which it very well may, so might the trend to larger watches for men.

I am a bigger guy and have just over an 8" wrist. Anything smaller than 40mm looks way to small on me. I really wanted an air king, but it looked like a ladies watch when I put it on. That said, even though I need a bigger watch , I still want it to look like a normal watch. Many of the larger watches (44+mm) tend to look like a fashion watch or rip off the U-Boat design which still seems like a fashion watch, and that does not appeal to me either. I would like Rolex to have more/continued offerings in the 40-44mm range, because I know they will look more traditional and not like some rapper hardware.

They already make a bigger Sub, it is called a Sea Dweller. No one here can tell you what is on the way. Live, be happy!
