Paul, are you sure it was "registered mail" and not another service. Registered mail is a unique and higher cost service typically used for parcels requiring higher insurance coverage. It would be strange to use it for a couple of hundred bucks sieko. Respectfully, I am not convinced this was the first instance I have heard about ...

At any rate, I have an update. Just now checked, and the USPS website says package was delivered at 12:32 this afternoon. I hope to hear an "all-okay" from the buyer soon.

Thanks for letting me rant and I appreciate you guys for listening.

Great news Lisa!! and from my understanding all par for the course.

Not time to relax yet.... last night my buyer reports he did not receive the watch! Their local post office told me today the item was delivered yesterday at noon and signed for. I asked who signed for it. "We don't have that information yet," he replied. I said, "you mean, registered mail is guarded under lock and key, and signed by every postal employee who touches it, but once it reaches the delivery address it's just left with any yahoo at all who meets up with the mail carrier and can sign for it?"

Can you believe it?

Once again, I'm finding all this just... mind-boggling.

Sorry Lisa, I feel your pain!!

I've been there, hopefully you'll get your info soon and they can investigate with the actual letter carrier. Hope you don't have to file a claim! That is a very time consuming process as well I'm afraid. You have my sympathy!!

Here's what worries me now, Marc - that USPS will say there is not basis for a claim because the item was delivered!

I sure hope a trusted colleague signed for it... hope to hear something soon from the buyer.

Holy moly Lisa! This is downright absurd! How can USPS NOT provide the name of the person who accepted the package?! Makes no sense.

Holy majoly. We await good news, Lisa. Mind boggling is right. They have to have a screen capture of the signature, don't they? Whether or not they can release it at this very instant, it has to be there...I think?

Jeez hope this gets sorted soon Lisa.

Well if someone else at the correct address signed for it then your buyer is culpable in some way. But if it went to the wrong address and the carrier just took anyone's signature that's where you have a claim.

The post office manager said the carrier who delivered on the buyer's route should have a record of who signed and that he will check with her when she returns from the day's deliveries. He said he'd call me with the information late this afternoon.

I even called the buyer's place of business an hour ago. The woman who answered didn't know of a package being delivered yesterday, and she wasn't too interested in asking around to find out who received yesterday's mail. She did say it was a small business; about 15 employees. My buyer was at work when the package was delivered, she said.

Surely I won't have to wait much longer to get to the bottom of things.

Wonder how that can be proven... it's one person's word against another. Well, not quite time to worry about that yet.

What is a private label? And right now I don't think there will ever be a "next time!"

With USPS, you can purchase "signature restricted delivery" where only the addressee and no one else in the household or place of business is allowed to sign for the package. Also, for anything valued under $5k, USPS "Express Mail" overnight w/insurance is the way to go. I never would have shipped a $3k watch registered. Live and learn. Hope everything works out for you!

Live and learn is right. I was planning to send overnight Express Mail and the clerk said Registered Mail was better - safer. She said nothing about signature restricted delivery, and I wouldn't have known to ask.

Anyhow, I think my buyer has received the watch. I called his place of business and they confirmed that he had it (he wasn't able to take my call).

I just was about to suggest this myself.

The carrier won't have anything if they delivered it yesterday. When we have to sign for something, we either have to turn in proof of delivery or the unclaimed item at the end of every day. Proof of delivery is a signed form we have and in some cases a return receipt as well.

If the carrier is the regular on the route, chances are they could tell you exactly who signed for am item.

Yes, the tracking system stinks Yes, just like everywhere else there are lazy employees who don't care about their jobs. I'm sorry you came in contact with one of them.

The station manager or Postmaster should help you in any way for no other reason than its their job

Paulie, the San Luis Obispo manager was a good guy - he said he'd call me after the carriers returned to the station to tell me who signed for the parcel. I just wish my OKC person would have given me better information.

At any rate, I've learned a lot over the past week.
