If Rolex issued a Sub without the name on the dial...I'd be in line for one.

The overwhelming majority of people out there do not notice a Rolex. My speculation is that this is because Rolex is the most copied brand out there. So many other less expensive brands, makes, models take cues from Rolex and it's what people are used to seeing on the wrist. This idea seems a little strange to us because we are the minority. We can tell an Invicta or Seiko from a Rolex at 50 yards but the average dude just cannot.

In my experience, the things people notice first about watches or think makes them cool or expensive are odd characteristics. People tend to think bigger is cooler and/or better. I have also noticed that two tone pieces tend to attract attention. My two tone Navitimer that I sold got 100x the compliments my Sub or Explorer II ever did. People didn't complement it because they recognized a Breitling, they liked it because it wore big and had a gold bezel. Watches with sub dials also tend to attract attention regardless if the watch is quality or not.

This brings me back to the purpose of this thread. The Explorer has none of those things and while it is instantly recognizable as a Rolex to us, I highly doubt anyone without an understanding of watches is going to recognize the beauty of it unless the happen to see the words Rolex on it. Get an AP or Panerai. I guarantee people will fall all over them and then lose interest when you tell them the brand and they have no clue that either makes amazing watches.

I didn't buy a Rolex for everyone to notice. I actually took the bracelet off to look less "Rolex"

Speak for yourself. Many people I know don't have that approach.

Deal with it.
OK I'll deal with it......!!! I'm pretty sure superdog you have just had a go at some of the replies (one being mine!) about what you perceive as inappropriate responses..... So to quote you “(this forum is) safe from this type of attack and judgement.” Then you posted … “but many of you are full of it.” ???
But I do agree with another of your quotes “I'm embarrassed at some of your comments.” Oh the irony/hypocrisy.....!!!!! And the audacity to post this garbage is dismal at best… “that the shotgun indignation and denial comes from people that very much feel the need to be "showing" a Rolex but are just too insecure to even admit it to themselves. This, of course, is just my opinion.”
At least you acknowledged it’s only an opinion and likely not based on any fact, research or credential!!!

And for the record….Most people don't notice your wrist or give a crap - (OK anectodal!) ...Some people don’t need validation from a superficial world about what they wear on their wrist because they have perspective about what is important in life….

These kinds of threads are the reason I think about selling my Rolex and buying some more really cool vintage Seiko...Rolex are cool…pity can’t be said for the few “want to be important” people who want to wear them…..……No wonder there are so many Rolex haters out there… Why??? Because we keep giving them reasons to be!!!!

Awww, did I hurt your feelings? I'm sorry. Not my intent.

I do find your post humorous tho.

And curious. Why, if you don't care what anyone thinks about your Rolex, would you switch to another brand?

Anywho, your post speaks volumes.

I bought my sub for a lot of reasons, tough/iconic/good looking etc
My sub barely, if ever, gets noticed so if I bought it to get noticed I made the wrong choice...

No superdog you didn't hurt my feelings

And I switch to different brands regularly cos it’s all about the watch and not about the person or the perception. Most of my friends think I’m a knob for wearing a Rolex anyway…… But who cares what others think….!!

I think you need the shiniest gold watch with diamonds and the dial that has rolex all over it so people all know you have made it and bought a rolex. The explorer is not for you. Different tastes and desires for different people. Many people like the explorer because of its quality and non-flash design. Not everyone buys a rolex to show they have a rolex and many very successful people avoid rolexes because they do not want to try appear they are trying to posture for success. At the end of the day gold and platinum rolexes are not very expensive watches for successful people so they don't care and are even amused by those that appear to wear them for status.

Having read these forums for a long time despite only joining recently I'm convinced that threads like this are started to create drama...there have been a few over the last few months.

Besides, I may be wrong but my understanding is that the explorer or pre explorer that went to Everest in 1953 was the first rolex sport model if not was created relatively contemporaneously with the submariner...or before which I thought was the case

So, as stated above what was the point?

The Explorer although not as popular as the Sub C in SE Asia but the dial 3,6,9 is very recognisable. The Explorer 1 esp. the 1016 is a perfect gentleman watch for the connoisseur and my 114270 used to sit proudly next to my PP 5127G in my watchbox before I sold the latter last year!

There's nothing wrong with wanting to buy a watch to be noticed, if that is the intent of the OP. People buy different brands / models for different reasons. To each his/her own. For myself, I rather not have people noticed my Rolex. I have got awkward questions when I wear my gold Datejust, eg "Wow... It's a gold Rolex! How much is it?", "It must be very expensive!". Blah...blah....blah. . So nowadays, I prefer to wear my Explorer II.

BTW, the Rolex Explorer is every bit as Rolex as all the other Rolex watches.
