I wear my 10 yr old black bezel GMT-II 95% of the time. It's been in the ocean and the pool (most recently over the July 4th holiday) with nary a problem. I wouldn't think of taking it off to go in the water. That's how I get it clean.

Had to go back to the UK for work so I figured I'd bring my SubC with me this time. This is the beach in question and the guy was there again so he seems like a regular. Just out of interest, both him and his wife take their watches off before swimming and they appear to take turns in the water. Guarding watches: what a crap way to waste your holiday, especially when it's just as easy to wear it...

On the other hand, the purchase of a Rolex is not an obligation to do anything with it. You can't get angry at a guy for not using his watch the way you would.

Maybe it has a lot of sentimental value to him and he doesn't want to risk it?
Maybe he forgot to get it pressure tested and he doesn't want to risk it?
He may be simply uncomfortable swimming with a watch.

There are many reasons other than just being scared of scratching. I see no point in slating a man when you know nothing about him or the situation. I didn't buy my sub so people could bitch about how I use it. If I don't want to wash my hands with my watch then that's my choice.
Concur, leave the guy alone!

Perhaps he'd had a similar experience...? Not that you get barracuda off the French cost (as far as I'm aware).
I was thinking this as well.

We used to fish for 'cudas in the Bahamas (they get big down there!) and the lure of choice is a shiny spoon...

Who knows why? It could be something as simple as the guy lost a watch once because the bracelet malfunctioned.

3. It wasn't an actual DSSD.

It is a very expensive piece of steel to lose to the ocean ... I wouldn't either...
if the bracelet comes off accidentally, then say good bye to your $9,000!

I'm not comfortable swimming with watch strapping on my wrist too. So I don't see how this is strange at all.

Hmm, this coming from a diver. So I take it you consider your DSSD as a "dress" watch and not for your work/hobby, yes? It begs the question with which of these do you then dive with?

I can't help but agree with Traveller here. Seriously, it's your watch and wear it wherever and whenever you please. But you can just easily lose your watch walking down the street as you would swimming/diving in the ocean.

To me it's just a watch and life's too short to worry about losing a piece of metal. Albeit an expensive piece.

Blasphemy...why, there ought to be a law--and this sounds like a TRF Felony.

Of course, one may do what one wishes, but I'd sure want to be able to say I'd at least gone swimming with my Deepsea.

Unless, as noted, I was worried it would drag me to the bottom...which could happen with that watch. Hefty thing, isn't it? That's why I chose a 14060M!

Not everyone buys a dive watch for swimming.

I wouldn't swim with one either.

I was getting in a pool wearing my Exp II and my brother-in-law yelled from across the pool that I better take my watch off before getting in the water.

I calmly told him it was waterproof.

I just spent a week at the beach swimming with my Rolex on. I wasn't concerned about the watch getting wet...but I felt a little funny about having a "lure" on my wrist. Lets face it...a shiny watch looks a LOT like bait fish...or a "spoon" lure that I often use for bait.....thoughts?

Well I agree it's the most dedicated diver in the Rolex line, I'd not go quite that far as to say it's for the ocean - period. I mean if that's the case please explain the date function.

I don't blame him. I won't wear my nice watches to the beach. Sweat, sun block.. don't want to dirty them up. Just wear my cheapo shark swim watch.

Actually, for saturation diving those guys could be down without surface daylight for days so the date function could be handy for them.

Not arguing that the date function also makes it more of a non-dedicated diver for us mere mortals as well.

just a thought...

If I'm at the beach or swimming somewhere other than the pool at my house I wear my sub just because I have no where to put it but swimming in the pool at home I take it off because it annoys me while swimming and I really don't need to know the time while swimming. It's just a personal thing and has nothing to do with not wanting to scratch or get the watch wet
