OMG I started reading and thought, what kind of Daytona is he talking about, two tone, PM? Wait is he unsure about paying retail for the SS one? Then I saw the posting date, 2013... Boy have things changed!!!!

That’s what I thought - imagine questioning whether to pay retail... and some posts say not to do it as it’s not a good deal and there are better deals easily found.
Even 15% OFF (gasp)! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Crazy, isn't it? I remember back in prob 2012-13 a well knows TS would not give more than 8K (USD) for a complete set F serial SS Black Daytona I wanted to trade toward a full PM.. Unfortunately, I went ahead with the deal and even though I love the PM, I sure wish I had kept the SS too

So he is being offered a 116520 at retail which is like 12,500. Last I checked these are going for like 16,000 or so? Are you saying gray market is selling the 116520 for under 12,500? If so I would love to see the link to the sale. |

Would you buy used Daytona at list price
Lol. Only few wanted it back then because it was known to depreciate several thousands. And now since it appreciates in value people want them hahaha. Blame Rolex. Blame the grey. Blame the flippers. Blame AD. Blame the world lol. There will always be people in this world to cry when they can’t get what they want.

This time capsule post which has today been resurrected is almost comical when we look at todays market. Things have certainly changed and this is testament to how much

I thought I was in the Twilight Zone! I kept going back to post one and double checking it said Daytona. Thought for sure it had to be DJ being talked about.
Brand new for under MSRP from trusted seller here on forum. I was like what are these people talking about! Wow that was a good laugh. What a difference in 5 years, that guy was headed for a padded cell for even thinking about paying list for a 4month old Daytona. So lets see how the question today about would you pay Gray price of double list for a new SS sport watch looks 5 years from now. |

I normally roll my eyes when I see these old, old threads resurrected. But this one is quite good. It’s amazing to see how the world has changed in 6 years. Some people believe there’s no end to the madness. Where do you think we will be after another 6?

In just 2016 Daytonas were trading for $9k-$9500. I passed on MANY of them offered at $10k, because I did not want to spend 5 digits, but I have also bought/sold several in the $9k range even lost money on a couple of them as it was much more fun trying out new pieces back then.

Thanks for bumping this to bring us back to reality. I am new to Rolex and I only own one, a BLNR purchased in early 2016 before the craze, and it was under retail for new. At the time I was also considering a used ceramic Submariner date in mint condition from various trusted sellers for 7k and sometimes under.
Once the next recession hits, we'll see prices come down I think, but who knows when that will be. If prices were more reasonable, I'd consider picking up a piece at the end of the year, but that's now not going to happen for me, a legitimate Rolex customer, and not a flipper. |

Would you buy used Daytona at list price
Quote:
Thanks all, don’t really bump old threads but thought that, as a daytona owner who paid (well) above MSRP I thought this would serve as a reminder of the state of the market just a few years ago, and this wasn’t even (as has been stated already) the peak of low prices/availability. I personally would have loved to purchase a Daytona, or a few other models back then, but it wasn’t my time to get into Rolex just then. Now that I am looking to start my Rolex collection, I find myself navigating different waters than 2013 (or 2016). For those that bemoan the increased “non-WIS” threads of late, please try to remember that if you were on this forum then, chances are you did not have to worry about availability, demand and prices as these were largely static and that the situation has changed vastly and not all due to new members - there are still those newbies that love and appreciate watches but find themselves in the market as it is and hence come here for a different type of advice. Additionally I am not really interested in investment growth (have an investment portfolio for that, as I am a financial planner by trade and other forums for that part of my life) and am buying for myself and the next generation. However, when you are forced to “overpay” compared to what some are able to pay, you perhaps do try to look for some reassurance that the market isn’t overpriced and they you’ll be sitting on a paper loss or have had the opportunity to purchase what is a relatively expensive non-essential item cheaper at a different time. I also think that most people who start “pricing” threads are also in the same(ish) category and only the minority are here for flipping advice. You old timers are now in the same situation as the ADs who have seen an increase in people coming in to ask about SS availability and still need to smile politely and say “sorry none in stock” for the 50th time that day.. perhaps a necessary evil given the circumstances. I also bumped this as I want to look back in a few years and be reminded of the current situation - no matter the state of the market then. Although I see no real let up in increased prices and decreased availability for the coming years, rather like the stock/property markets from 2005-2015, sure they may be a dip/correction but again for us long-termers there is little to be worried about and if we are lucky we should be buying regularly to take advantage of pound (dollar) cost averaging. Anyway this post is long enough already. Hopefully the bump served to provide a little perspective to you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I can’t believe this myself as the OP, but I can assure you all this was a genuine thread back in 2013.
The AD in question is still my main one, and I since learned the reason they send ALL pre-owned watches (regardless of age) to the service centre. It is to ensure the watch is genuine inside and out, running to spec and supplied with a new manufacturer’s warranty that covers the buyer, but more importantly them. You will all be pleased to know that following the great advice I got from the forum at that time, I turned the watch down. I was then offered a new Black one from the AD a couple of months later, turned that down too (wanted white). In early in 2014 I was offered a 3rd in white from my AD which I also turned down as it looked too small on the wrist. Ahh those were the days, 3 steel Daytona’s at RRP turned down in 6 months, I also turned down a 1680 red sub, meters first, full set, service for £7500 the same year from a different dealer. By far the biggest regret was the red 1680, really should have got that one. |

Man was I shocked, until I read the date of the post. Time flies, and so does the Rolex prices and its demand.
