I think that the 20 persons are hardcore collectors that do not look to resell at a higher price, but rather have a unique piece in their collections. This allowed them to have this kind of piece in their collection.

This is standard fare for most high-end consumer brands:
- Ferrari does it with many of their cars at launch (458/458spyder/laferrari/599gto/etc)
- Lamborghini does it (revention/sesto element)
- McLaren did it with their second car before they even had long-standing loyal customers! (MP4-12C HS)
- Many LE watches with true limited production..
- LV purses (my wife has more than one 'exclusive' where she got a call, yes/no on the spot, and then they're gone)
- Heck, even Nike does releases that are sold out before they're available to the public...
