I find myself doing that Travis. Ever since I hooked up with this delightful bunch here, I check out people's watches....constantly...especially the guys' watches. I'm always very tactful....."I love your watch!...what is that?"...and then add that I just "have a watch fetish".......

Maybe Sao Paulo. Here they don't invite you into their car, they get in yours and take you for a ride to empty your account via ATMs and whaterver you have on you. Thats why: "my other watch is a Casio"

My watch has gotten a few comments and definitely some curious looks from those who seem to wonder if it truly is a Rolex without a cyclops. The comments and looks are only from those who have Rollies or have other fine watches. I'm just lucky enough to own one ...

I've only had one non-WIS ID my Sub so far. The second was true watch nut, and the third simply commented something to the effect of "nice watch" before realizing what it really is while being shown. I find it curiously satisfying I can have the watch I've always wanted, and still not be too concerned about standing out and attracting unwanted attention. I like the freedom, too, you see.

In 23 years of daily wear, exposed to thousands and thousands of people I have had maybe 5 comments on my GMTs. 2 of the five were teenage boys and the other three were Rolex wearers. 99.999% percent of people could care less what kind of watch you wear. If you are getting all kinds of comments on your watch, you are obviously drawing attention to it. I was in a meeting not too long ago and there were 7 Rolexes being worn out of the 11people there---no one mentioned a word about watches. Compared to most of the watches you see around the world these days, especially in the orient, my Rolex GMTIIC has a "Quiet Elegance", just the way I like it.

For me, the response is usually - "Wow, is that a REAL Rolex?", or "Is that a Rolex?"

Well, a muzzle may not stop the tendency, but it could give other good folks some peace.

Hey, each lesson may not cost much, but when you factor in the number of lessons required ...

I've had a few comments on my Rolex and Omega watches. Most of them are "nice watch," etc. Typically these comments lead to something along the lines of "how much did that cost?" Then you have to listen to all the BS about how expensive they are. One of the guys at work was telling me I could have bought a car for what I paid for my Sea-Dweller. I said "Yes, I guess so, but it would not have been one I want to drive."

Nobody ever commented on my (former) Omegas either. You'd think that people would since one of them's a famous movie watch. Hayek needs to do a better job!

I have two mechanicals, my GMT II and a five year old Seamaster Pro. In all the time I've owned the SMP, I've received exactly one comment on it, from a co-worker, and he said, "Nice watch." I've had the GMT for about two months, and the only time it's been noticed is by my girlfriend and by a watch salesman at Ben Bridge, who is also a Rolex fan. Otherwise, nothing. Zip. Nada.
It's odd, but the more money I've spent on watches, the less they seem to get noticed. However, I now notice everyone else's Rolex's. |

I've only had a few people say anything
I use to work as a computer Lap Tech at the university I went to, I was assisting a student, I had on my gold DJ he noticed it and about crapped his pants. He said "do you know how much you could pawn that for" I couldn't beleive that comment. I would never pawn my watches.
I've only had my Sub for a short time and it has been noticed once. I think people see the bubble on the date and it screems Rolex to them. This girl at work saw it and said "is that a real rolex?" I said yes, expecting something like man they must pay you good or some crap like that. No she then goes on to say "those are expensive, like 1000.00$ almost" I just said close and left it at that. |

Only heard a few nice comments such as "very nice watch" from the relatives or close friends. To strangers, many, many & many times when I saw someone was looking at my watch, he/she simply just turned his/her head other way. That's natural though.
One time at a sushi bar, there was one guy who was wearing a DJ, jubilee (old style), fluted & white in color. He kept looking at my jubilee (new style) throughout the nite without saying a word. In the mean time, I kept looking at his girlfriend (not ill-meaning) :))))))). She's pretty nice. For me, that was a good experience w/ Rolex without saying a word. Good weekend to all. |

Once got noticed by a manager at a Xmas party - "we're paying you too much!" I said "not as much as your Xmas bonus". I know I didn't win a friend there.

The weirdest "watch sighting" /comment experience I've ever had was in a casino near Lake Tahoe. It's about 1am and I'm at one end of a full blackjack table. I notice the guy at the other end staring at me for a few seconds. We make eye contact and he simply says "IWC?". I respond "Yes."
Everyone at the table to include the dealer stares at me agape and has absolutely no clue what we're talking about. Finally, to avoid continued attention I say that he was asking me if my watch was an IWC model. Then they look at him like he's nuts. |

I was in a plush car dealership last month and the salesperson dealing with me gushed over the Daytona I was wearing.
It was slightly weird as his voice went all "squeaky" and he did go a bit over the top, calling his business manager over to gawp. I am not sure if he was a watch enthusiast or whether watch spotting was part of his training.

I believe the Sub, SD and GMT watches look "identical" to the non-WIS, and since they reflect such a huge part of the Rolex inventory, they collectively are "The Rolex." |

In forty years of daily wear - both at work and socially - I can't recall anyone ever noticing or commenting on my GMT.

Mine is for me and would never purposely show it off, I'd prefer no one to really ever know. It's a shame for those who become envious though, I pity their lack of substance. We all make choices, and a nice watch to me is a big deal.

Now back on topic, did anyone see Good Morning America the other day? They had a story about two attractive women that trolled casinos and high class hotels looking for single middle aged men wearing ROLEX watches. They would approach them and using paints, powders and feminine ways would cloud their minds. As they were having drinks the women would drug the poor souls. When the men regained their senses the Rolexes and their wallets were gone, most never reported the crime. So some women do take notice if a man wears a Rolex. |

Hi Bighat! Think you've got a real point there regarding familiarity, it is the subs, gmt's and datejusts that typify the brand, very few really know much about Daytona's and what the 'three sub-dials' are. I'm in motors and kept my SS Daytona firmly up my sleeve, didn't ever want to jeopardise even the smallest of sales, you know what some people are like! Anyway Daytona gone, back in a beefcake, though can't always get the SD under the cuffs!!!

Not many comments...with the 57 OPD its:
"That's an old one" or "Wow, isn't the crystal high?" With the LV its simply "They don't do James Bond Rolexes in green. That must be fake" Most people don't really notice or care althoiugh walk into any jewellry shop or watch boutique and it's the first thing they notice. Not only that, they are only too helpful to show you their latest models and let you try them on. J |
