My image was always that of a two tone DJ with fluted bezel. A sub never even entered my head.

Back in the 80s there was a watch "program" for windows (hell, it could have been DOS based for that matter) that would act as a screen saver. Of course it was a Rolex and it sure wasn't a tool watch; it was a DJ. Tool watches, although they can be dressed up, always bring up their heritage. The DJ has always been an elegant watch from my perspective and for me that has been Rolex's allure.

Even though I don't own one yet. I'm going with the DJ/DD. I noticed these long before I noticed the Sub.

I just put an oyster bracelet on my DJ and it feels like a classic sub with elegance.

DJs are fantastic watches.

To me its all about nostalgia, and what drew you to the brand. I feel the Sub is Classic, but it was seeing people with the gold dd/President that I remember as a kid.

The DJ is the most iconic. This is why I bought a DJ, it looks like the Rolex I remember seeing as a kid.

Icon2

The DJ probably outsells the Sub, but to a WIS, the Sub would be more iconic IMO. Which is truly more iconic? ~ like asking who is more appealing: Ginger or Mary Anne....

both...but..

To a WIS, Sub, but the rest of the world, DJ.

I was just watching the movie Dallas Buyers Club and there was a solid gold datejust/or president case shot AND verbal reference to it albeit just "Rolex".

DJ signifies Rolex/business/affluence(ironically) while Subs signify Rolex/ sport/active lifestyle.

Here's a test. Take both pictures of a watch, blur out the brand name Rolex on the dial and ask random people which one is the Rolex. My parents would certainly point to the DJ.

What is painful (with all due respect however) is EVERYBODY can recognize a Museum piece Movado.

sub because i have owned one for so long.

if you would have asked me as a child to point to the one i recognized first, it probably would have been the DJ.

Great question! It's much like which came first the chicken or the egg? If I had to answer would say the DateJust. The DateJust was produced by Rolex about a decade before the Submariner and really put Rolex on the map. Both are timeless icons!

The fluted bezel and Cyclops are the iconic elements that communicate "Rolex" to the masses. DJ.

Voted for Datejust as I truly feel the Datejust is THE iconic Rolex. Many on this Forum would most likely beg to differ as the Submariner is truly loved here, however, as a global icon, that title goes to the Datejust.

In a past era it was the Datejust. I truly believe this no longer is true and the Submariner is by far the most iconic now.

if that is true why is their newest Rolex the crown of their latest technical achievement(for the last 30 years). The first Oyster Rolex to have a new model name in 30 years; based on the DJ style. I am talking about their Skydweller. It does not look like a sub does it looks like a DJ.

Both for me. The whole attraction of the Rolex brand is these iconic watches that have changed very little over many decades. I also like the Omega Speedy Pro for the same reason, but Omega have trashed the appeal of the seamaster by changing it every 6 months.

World wide the Datejust is Rolex largest seller, in tbe US the Sub is probably the sales leader. Datejust does have the advantage in that it also has the ladies models.
