I'm not sure how to explain the excitement of picking up a Rolex. Not sure if anyone else has ever been as excited as I am about throwing down a few thousand for a watch. LOL. Most people wouldn't even understand why. But I'm supposed to be picking up at Sub with the Chapter ring. Hopefully this will smile back at me.

My vote goes to the Air-King.

I would go ahead and get something that you'll be happy with for a few years. I bought a datejust, and was ready to move on to a two-tone sub rather quickly, so I really didn't save any money.

Sub Date, but that's my opinion. You have to get which watch smiles back at you. That's the watch for you. Good luck and keep us posted. .

Not especially. I wanted something a little more heavy duty and versatile. To each his own, but these aren't like golf clubs or something where one type might be easier to use than another and therefore meets the needs of a beginner. My father-in-law's first Rolex was a DD, and it's also his only Rolex. He bought it over 20 years ago and still wears it every day.
If you're on a limited budget, get a used watch that could use some polishing. We're all on a limited budget. It's a relative term. That doesn't necessarily mean you need to settle for less watch, unless something like an Airking just really suits your eye. If it does, go for it. But make sure you see it up close and personal against other, bigger cases first and then make your decision.

Unless you dive, get a GMT.
It's just a nice, useful watch. 3 time zones, date, goes with everything.

A GMT would be nice. But I'm no diver... but I'm sure I can make it work . The GMT is exquisite, but the Sub Date has always been calling out to me ever since I've known about Rolex. But I wanted to get an AK just for the Rolex name, and peers from TRF just told me to get something thats smiles back at me, and not to get something to just have it.

Same here. But I wouldn't consider it a "beginner's rolex" or a beginner's watch of any sort. Agreed, it's not flashy yet it's decent enough to take along in any situation. It has no date but, I need a watch, not a calendar.
I used to think it was an issue though that it's slightly smaller than a datejust but then again, why would it be an issue when 34mm was the norm just a few decades ago? What's so different about the men today and the men of the past? |

so many to choose from, air king or explorer 1 would be my sugggestion and as you get bitten by the bug progress to subs and sea dwellers another suggestion is to get your name put on the waiting list for a daytona so when in a few years time you are ready for your next watch its ready and waiting you hope.....

Any really, but if your looking for BNIB from an AD, then the 14060M Sub, or New style Airking which looks great.
But there again you may go in try one on and the one that smiles at you is the one to go for. IMO there is no "starter Rolex" By the way, picture of the 14060M is not mine but some other rogue on this forum

Judgment day in about 9 hours. Now if I already had one on my wrist, I can tell you the exact time
