The nicknames don't bother me (well maybe "smurf"). Reference number or name are fine in most cases.
I am just thankful Rolex doesn't use an Omega-style reference system. "Incoming 232.30.42.21.01.001!!!"

If anybody is interested , the Rolex nick names originated from a know deceased member JJ.
He was already sort of a legend being alive and his spirit still is around seeing him mentioned in many signatures of members. JJ was a master in making up names for his watches. So when he started to use those names people copied the name for their own watch. JJ did more than just give them names. They became real personalities and he made up stories of bathroom battles, love scenes (with wife's watch), etc between his watches. Anyway, a long time ago, when this forum was brand new and owned by someone from Florida it struggled to get of the ground. But because of events at the, that time, biggest Rolex forum JJ moved over here and many of his friends followed. I believe that was the start of the immense success of this forum. When JJ joined this forum it took of like a rocket and it never stopped growing. Sadly the man is no longer among us but his, apparently to many silly, names stayed and always remind me of him. He had his strange habits, he had his faults but I have a feeling this forum would never have been what is now without that one man. So maybe in honor of him just swallow the names. Just saying.

Ha. I have bigger problems.
I don't dislike any of them. Don't give it enough thought.

For me its quicker to type when I just stick to letters, and nicknames are generally good, the shorter the better as I am on here way too much as it is.
Don't like Rollie, Batman or Bruiser but otherwise all are fine by me. Smurf must be a pain for those with the luxury gold watch - where did this misnomer-name come from? |

I do not believe JJ ever owned a 'kermit' and can't remember who used the name first. But chances are he did come up with it as he liked 'inventing' names for Rolex watches.

I have never been a 'nickname' guy. I cannot say I 'hate' nicknames, especially nicknames for Rolex watches; it merely adds character to each piece. I studied English and I am brainwashed to refer to people, objects by their names rather than a contraction. Sounds pompous, but it's just how I am. I don't think there is anything wrong with a nickname, but when you hear it from me, I will always refer to my pieces as a GMT-Master II 116710LN and a GMT-Master 16750 Pepsi.
In essence, I do incorporate the nickname, however it makes it more identifiable when using the full name of the timepiece. Either way, this is Rolex, and Rolex is about what suits your character. If you use nicknames, why not? :) |

Actually if we're going to do a history lesson, I believe the first to receive a nickname was the 16760. Nickname "The Fatlady" by a German collector due to the thicker case used on the early MASTER II.

You obviously didn't get one of the special watches... you know, when people post that they picked the one that 'spoke' to them... "Hi! Please buy me!"

I think all of the nicknames are pretty ridiculous but I think the bruiser might be the worst as it simply makes no sense....why would a bruiser be covered in bruises? A bruiser delivers bruises, he doesn't absorb them.

Have to agree Mike today there is quite a different Rolex owner, with many today who wear just the brand. And by wearing that brand somehow think it rises them to some sort of higher status.

Many people somehow have the money to buy what they perceive as an "investment" and a status symbol while at the same time attaching cute juvenile nicknames to their "look at me" pieces of jewelry. It was nice when we discussed the watches and the brand here. Oh well!

I hate the term Rollie & rolex as a "beater watch".

Yes, it should really be called "bruised" instead.
