I can no longer wear the 40mm Rolex Models...

Anything to me that is much larger than 40 42 starts to look like a "knob" watch, break out the graphic tees and hair gel- very trendy grandiose, attention seeking you might say.
That's not my style but so what. To each his own, style is personal and nothing is more personal than a watch.

There was a time when you wouldn't drive a car without a giant firebird decal on the front, or huge bellbottom pants... big is a fad... but only time will tell...

Had a 50mm UBoat Flightdeck - loved it....... then hated it. Talk about a maxi dial- no need for a wall clock when I was in the room!

Congrats on the weight loss - impressive achievement

My own sweet spot is 42mm and hence why the exp II 42 is the watch that finally convinced me to get a Rolex. The new subs with fat lugs are out of proportion IMO, while the true 42mm case of the exp retains the classic shape and taper much better.

Tried a blue faced yachtmaster on today and it felt a tad small.

Thanks, my 14060M wears like a dream. I have been taking links out of all my watches for the past 6 months.

I had the same feeling. Most of my watches fall in the 42-44mm range. (I beg to differ as to big being a fad by the way...most of my collection are vintage divers and chronos from 60s and 70s.)

Anyway, thought the 40mm rolex models would be too small. Bought a 42mm exp2. Then I got a Pepsi 16710. Smaller, but not small. It wears fine for me, and I have nearly an 8 inch wrist.

I think balance is the key. Rolex case heights are in proportion to the case diameter and both are in proper proportion to the bracelet. It all works together.

Besides, no need for all your watches to be the same size...variety is king!

Couldn't disagree more with the OP, although I can not dispute the general trend toward larger watch cases. For my 7.25" wrist, 40mm is now the max, with only my 42mm Planet Ocean making the cut because I so like the the aesthetics. I believe evaluating a watch' s size by looking down at your wrist from 12" to 16" away does not give the proper perspective.

So much of this is based on what you get used to on your wrist. I started with bigger watches than the Daytona, but now all of them seem way too big.

My choice: 34-36mm for dress watches........39-42 for sport watches.

This won't be true much longer. It's like being in to baggy jeans in 2008. I was talking to the guy who cuts my hair and works in a very trendy and upscale area of Dallas. He obviously needs to keep up with the latest in fashion and trends for his job. Today we were talking about watches and he saw the trend as going smaller and back to the vintage style of watches. He has seen it on tons of celebrities.

I wore my 50 mm Invicta Subaqua Noma IV today while working on the boat. It reminded me of being under house arrest. I used to feel that 44 mm was small and now it even feels oversized.

50 mm Invicta...

46 mm Invicta

44 mm Invicta

I'd say the sweet spot is 38-40mm on most wrists. My maximum is a small 42mm (Speedy) and my minimum would probably be 34mm.

I remember seeing a video of a shopping channel on YouTube once and they were selling Invictas. I forget the name of the owner and the guy that used to do the selling, but both are infamous.

In that particular segment, the big selling point of the watch that was featured was that it weighed 16 oz., that's one pound!

I couldn't believe it. They actually had a scale on the desk.

Properly proportioned don't you think? Actually, I think it could be a bit bigger - what a great history.

Everyone has to remember that size is extremely relative. I've owned everything from a 36mm Datejust to a 45.5mm Planet Ocean. I don't think we can know what fits what until we see the watch on someone's wrist. I always recommend someone trying on a watch before buying, because you neber know what it'll feel like on YOU.

I thought I would love the larger Pelagos until I opened the box and put it on for the first time. I was ready to box it right back up and list it for sale.

Haha, idk, I'm 6'1", 7.5 inch wrist and I think 40mm is great size.

Check out this video of JJ Redick discussing this very thing.

A lot has to do what you are used to. I have had a Panerai for years. In pictures I really wanted the GMT II. I almost bought it without trying it on. When I tried it on it just felt small to me. At the same time I tried on the Explorer II and I loved it. I wasnt even considering it. When I showed my wife the new watch, the first thing she said: "Looks small"

Sd 16600

At 39.5mm, the slightly smaller Sea Dweller 16600 suits me better than the larger watches.

I think the Airking still looks great. I think it wears and appears larger than its 34cm. I put one on and it looked great even though my others run 40cm. I'd have no issues wearing an Airking, particularly the current blue model with the 3,6,9

The question you are asking is:-

Does this look too big, too small or just right?
