Is true in BC that non-resident only pay GST and can avoid PST since we are taking it out of the province?

Yeah and don't forget the discount you could get.

Here in Calgary you can get a discount of anywhere between 10% and 23% off MSRP depending on your relationship with the dealer. Divide that by 1.27 (exchange rate) and bang you are about $2 grand lower than US ADs.

Yes but you won't be able to buy it in person. Or if you do, they will have to ship it over to your province and not let you pick it up. Same thing with Montblanc and Cartier boutique in Vancouver.

If you are out of province and want to save on PST, they will have to ship your purchase to you.

Its cool that unlike Patek, Rolex price is consistent (or so it seems) across the country. Was quoted the same price for a 116622 blue dial here in Halifax a few days ago.

Discounts at an AD even makes the watches there more affordable than trusted TRF sellers. Canadian dollar is pretty weak atm.

That's been my experience as well
Especially when you take into account duty on the import, tax and the dollar exchange

Yes i agree.
We got a DJ for the wife in downtown Calgary in Oct or Nov last year and got 10% off.
Walked between the 3 shops there and she picked the one she wanted; went and had a coffee while they sized it...job done!
So not really worth my time or effort to source from outside the country....right now anyway.

Just got an email from my AD yesterday that there will be a price increase on all watches effective March 1 due to the appreciation of the Swiss Franc. I had heard about this happening in other countries and now prices are going up in Canada.

I though this as well as I had done it in the past, but Canada has discontinued that program so you no longer get the GST back. Only way to avoid the taxes is to have it shipped outside the Province (but then GST is still charged) or ship out of the country.

I walked into an AD today to take a look at a solid yellow gold submariner black face, and they offered 22% off pretty easily. Do you guys think 25% off is reasonable? What's the maximum you think I can reasonably push to get off?

Go for 35%, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I think you can get 25 to 30% off of solid gold models. This figure is from personal experience. Good luck.

25-30?? Glad I asked. So do you think for a solid gold the minimum I should shoot for would be 25%?

That is what I would try for. Keep in mind, every AD is different and some will discount based on the type of relationship they have with you. Basically the amount of business you have given them. If you are a first time buyer and they are offering a 22% discount, you may be able to ask them for 25% off. 30% off may be a little too much as a first time buyer.

Bring cash and let them know you're serious when you ask for 30% off. Walk out the door if you don't get 25% minimum.

I'm located in Toronto however I travel to Calgary for work a few times a year. I think it may make sense to purchase in Calgary because of the lower tax rate.

Anyone have personal experience receiving ~25% off a solid gold piece in Calgary?

So what are the rest of you fellow Canucks doing to source your watches? I've spoken to a few Canadian sellers that want a premium because the CAD is low, even though they paid for their pre-owned watches when the dollar was higher. It's just a shitty situation where we're stuck going to an AD and trying our luck since importing is just not worth it.

i just call an AD and ask.
did that a few weeks ago when i was making plans
"hello"
Good morning. Please can you tell me the price of a green GMT?

it was $X, she rattled of the price too quickly so I called another, $250 cheaper!
but it gave me a starting point

In Canada every AD I've dealt with won't discuss discounts over the phone. They will give you the list price, which you most likely know going into the conversation anyway, and that's it. They want you in the store before any discounts are discussed.

I imagine that for people that live a few hours away from an AD it could be pretty frustrating.

Buying them from the local Canadian AD at the moment is the cheapest option.
Cost more to bring in from the States....or buy overseas and bring home.
