What do the general public think a Rolex cost?

I don't mind that people think they are so expensive. Means they are less likely to try and buy one, so the chance of me seeing the same watch on someones wrist goes down just a bit.

£2k is what most people think my subc cost. I usually say close, not treble.

Well to most people, the idea of spending $5,000+ for a watch made of steel is REALLY expensive. My step-father, who owns one of those gold coin, solid gold watches, things I'm insane to spend what I did on a steel watch.

Now I think his watch is gawdy as hell and most likely isn't worth more than the value of the gold it's made out of, but he does have a point. Rolex watches cost what they do because WE are willing to pay that price - not because they are really "worth" that much in terms of materials or cost to build

I think if there was a number it would be $5,000. And I have a friend that says he likes nothing but the best, can't/won't spend over $500 on a watch. There are a lot of good watches under $500 depending on your needs. G-shock, ecozilla, Hamilton, some shinola etc. in the end it is all a matter of value in the eye of the beholder (of the cash).

Lets be honest.......it's not much different from the average man estimating the cost of a wifes new handbag, you ask and she replies "£75/$100", and you think, "jesus, how much".

And your wife thinks, "phew, i got away with that one, he'd explode if he knew the real price"..

I work for a head-hunting firm (which makes it almost sound glamorous). I would guesstimate I 'interview' maybe a couple of hundred exec level guys and gals each year in the UK and Europe and have done for the last ten years. I have some lovely watches that I'm very proud of and certainly don't make any real effort to hide. In all that time and with all those people only two have ever commented on a watch (both times it was a Pam). Really, truthfully, I think we love our watches and frankly 90% of society couldn't care less!

All this talk of perceived value... really?... I'd love to have a chat with someone who shares my interest (that's why I'm here), the only people I'm aware of who look at a guys wrist and assess a value are thieves and Thai hookers.

I've fortunately avoided one and am yet to meet the other

I have found that the best way to answer the question when someone asks you how much your Rolex costs is to say ...... a lot less than the really expensive watch brands.

My 20 year old Sub is worth more than I paid for it, so if I was wearing that watch and got asked the question, at this point I suppose my answer would be "It was free."

Interestingly, since Rolex designs are so consistent over the years a person could ask one guy how much his Sub was and be told $2,000 while the next guy could tell him almost $10,000. The average person would think the 2nd guy got screwed on the same watch.

I think people generally have no idea how many different Rolex models there are, the variation within model ranges, and the fact that there is a huge second-hand market where prices vary enormously.
I do think that a lot of people may not like the idea of buying a piece of very personal 'jewellery' second-hand, whereas it's not an issue for WIS.
I think most of my friends would say A$10K as the likely cost of "a Rolex".

In Australia most people assume they are fake's from Thailand? unless they are in the Know!

We live in a world of knock-offs...fake luxury goods are the norm. Even if one isn't wearing a garish, blingy-style type Rolex, a tool watch let's say, the common assumption is that it's a fake simply because it says, "Rolex." People are more prone to believe in the simulation (fake/knockoff) than the real (authentic Rolex). Blame it on Jean Baudrillard!
