I grew up with some pretty rough and out-of-control friends, and had to limit my time and type of surroundings with them. I decided to do this in 1976, when I was 19 years old. It was a defining decision in my life, and not very easy to do. I went a different way and have been a college professor for almost 25 years now. I am still friends with those guys, and almost all of them went through a lot of tough stuff and are regular members of AA now. I support them and give them a lot of credit now. This is your defining moment, Steve.

Wow Steve. Really sorry to hear that. From the sound of things, it could have been a lot worse. I hope you have a speedy recovery and think twice before hanging out with this friend again...at least when he's drunk.

This type of behaviour is an affront to many as it should be but I remember a different time in my life where this scenario would be very familiar and I tend to refrain from passing judgement because of it.

Steve, I think I understand your position and I wish you the best and a speedy recovery.

Think it's time to take some responsibility. Horrible story and am sorry for what happened to you - but does sound that you and your friend started something and they finished it to be honest but just blaming your friend isn't going to help. Sounds to me like you need to lay off the sauce too. And if possible - you and your friend should just walk away. Perhaps you need some serious help if the drinking has been a problem - which it sounds like it might be.

And as for the watch - frankly when it comes to broken bones and heads - the watch is the last thing to matter.

Steve

Hey buddy, sorry to hear about your bad night.

It's no consolation to you but it's just a watch, they can be replaced or repaired. A buddy of mine got into the same kind of situation and got bottled as he was on all fours looking for his watch.

He's now confined to a wheelchair and needs constant nurse supervision.

Things can always be much, much worse.

I'm sure I speak for everybody on here when I say I'm glad you're okay and sometimes a little collateral damage is the best kind!

Sounds like the one beer and one shot were very expensive more than just in money terms. Might not want to be with your friend at bars or drinking establishments anymore.

Glad to hear everything will be okay. Make sure you learn something from this ordeal. Remember, "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Time to get new friends. The a non raging alcoholic one.

I don't get people that get into situations like this I mean, even if I was drunk I don't push the fine line like that. How do you know the other guy doesn't have a gun or knife? Is your drunken pride worth ending your life? Your friend is a moron, PERIOD!

When I was looking for a parking spot at my gym, this roid rage idiot just darts across the street in front of my car, I had to slam the brakes. He screams at me "Hit me and ill kick your ass!". In my head im thinking, "What the fuck?" What if I had a glock?, and shot his ass down because he wanted to be a tough guy? People in this world need to chill out.

You and your "friend" are very lucky you only got your ass kicked. I wonder if he would have been so brave if this would not have been a bunch of kids (skateboarder types)? Somehow I don't think so

I'd advise you to get some new friends before you end up in the morgue.

Sorry to hear your bad news, but you know that this could have been a lot worse.

I used to have a pal like that, if he couldn't make trouble with a stranger in a club he'd start on one of his friends ( the "how am I funny" scene from Goodfellas always reminds me of him ), he was a total liability & I'm glad I haven't seen him in years. I know we can all get upset when someone steps on our tail but these days I'm really careful when I put my tail.

I know you're a loyal friend Steve but this guy isn't worthy of that loyalty, is he gonna pay for the watch repair? Exactly!!!

Hope you heal quickly & good luck with the repair Steve

I am not going to beat up on you, it sounds like you are getting your knuckles rapped enough here as it is; however, having said that, I am going to tell you what I see coming into the ER on a regular evening. I am an xray tech, so I see the before picutres (literally)

In the last couple of weeks, I have seen the results of similar incidents, guys who have lost eyes, the use of an arm (glass sliced nerves), shattered shoulders, broken knees, ruptured spleens, damaged spines (guy jumped on other guy when he was down).

All the result of bad judgement. Many of the guys (and a few girls) will never be the same again; their ability to make a living will be hampered and no matter how hardened, it leaves emotional scars. I have had tough gangbangers burst into tears on my xray table and tell me some pretty hair raising stories, I usually hold their hands and let them get it out...and then give the same Mom Advice I am going to give you....

I don't ever want to see you in my ER again; These are not friends, they are users that you are enabling. You get your ass back to school and make something of yourself, make yourself someone you could be proud of, one day you are going to have kids and you want them to look up to you, not down on you.

Last night I meet my friend at our local bar. 1 beer 1 shot each cause we had to go to another bar. As we're leaving about 12 18 year old kids, skateboarder types, could have been or could not have been staring at us.

Steve,
Just re-read this portion of what you said....You have a serious problem. Get help NOW while you still can.

Okay, I'm not a guy and I'm not 28 by a long shot - but who cares if a group of kids is looking at you? Sounds like standoff between a pack of dogs, not young people.

I feel bad for all of you that this ugly incident happened. But thank you for sharing it and I hope you feel better soon. What happened to your buddy? Is he worse for wear, too?

Wow, alot of responses, judgments, assumptions, etc. I agree this thread should be closed. To answer your specific question, I personally don't care if a group of kids are staring at me. Someone said something about a chip on their shoulder and I think that is definitely the case with my friend. I know his dad is a heavy drinker, his 2 brothers, that combined with this Rambo I gotta prove to the world how tough I am attitude he's had ever since I've known him doesn't always make for good times. He had some medical term I forget the name for screwed up eye and cuts and bruises on his face, but that's about it. But I see him getting beat down even if he's 100% wrong, I'll have his back, even if it's 30 of them. This thread has gotten too long and is un Rolex related at this point-please shut it down.

Maybe the next time that you go out with your friend, you wear a Casio G Shock, they will certainly take a pacing.
And it won't be so expensive.

Ladies & gentlemen,

This has been one helluva thread. In all fairness to the original poster, Steve, it must be said that he at least had the guts to come out with all this in the open.

Hopefully, all our comments and advice have gone down nicely and our friend, Steve, will try to mend his ways. Let's give him some credit in that he has learnt a "lesson" from this mis-adventure.

Good luck, Steve......take care and try a different path. Stick with good, sincere friends who can set a good example to you which you can then follow.

Best - JJ
