FYI: I know a friend who recently purchased a high end watch and crossed the border back with it from US to Canada. He was wearing the watch and had the watch papers inside the bag. No box. Only papers. He was asked to open the bags and they found the papers. He got pulled into a room and questioned. They seized the watch and it is now in CBSA possession. The fees to get it back are up to 80% of the value. It needs to get an appraised first. It takes a few months to get it back and you will need a lawyer. Just make sure you know what you are doing.

I got an idea how about buy a fake $500 rolex watch with the receipt then declare it coming from canada to us with the receipt then BUY an authentic rolex watch from the states lol so when you go back you' ll be the wiser since you declared the watch coming to US they can't really tell the difference with the clones nowadays.

Shipping a fake Rolex across the border might get you in bigger trouble.

How about you borrowing a genuine rolex from a friend with his reciept and declare it in Canada customs before coming inside the US and then you buy the SAME watch in the US and go back to Canada, since you already declared the authentic rolex watch before coming in I doubt they would question you going back inside Canada.

How about you just either buy in Canada or buy in the US and declare it and pay the duty and tax like other law abiding citizens.
If you can't afford the taxes then buy a cheaper watch you can afford.

There is your answer there.

Don't mess around with customs.

These threads pop up from time to time with some people advising how to get around customs. Just a bad idea. From a law enforcement perspective you lie or try to pull a fast one and get caught the officer is going to hammer you. Be honest with your declarations and I suspect that most officers will use their discretion.

You keep saying this, but I don't think it applies when you yourself are committing a crime by trying to smuggle a watch into the country without paying taxes/duty on it. I think by trying to smuggle it, you forfeit your right to demand the property back.

If I am wrong, maybe I'll go rob a bank then demand that the cops give me back the money under CC s.337.

About 5 years ago I bought a GMT Pepsi from the USA and had it shipped to Canada

Although it's probably frowned on in this board, I had the seller label it as "Scuba Gear" and insured at $4,000

I didn't pay any duty.

We need to change the name of this thread to 'How to beat Canada Customs'

My advice? Don't even try. Not worth it at all.

With the exchange the way it is right now, we are paying automatically 25-30% more, even before taxes, duties. Not worth it IMO.

Stories like this remind me why I left the People's Republic of Canada twenty years ago.

I don't miss the snow or the taxes.
