Maybe we should take the whole "watch sings to you" thing more literally.

Absolutely amazing!

Just post it up. Would be interesting to hear the slow-mo.

Besides, since you work there, you could always trouble yourself and do another recording without the hissing.

That said, aren't there any software to edit out that hissing sound specifically? (if using your original video)
All microphones produce some static, it's the nature of the electronics. In order to record such a quiet sound, I had to turn the gain (volume) up on the microphones all the way and then boost it even more in the computer. The noise was considerably worse and I did a lot of work already to get it as good as it is. The remaining static is at frequencies that I can't cut out without making it sound weird. I didn't want to alter the original sound of the watch.

I thought so too, and recorded it, but it was just a very harsh click that sounded like data corruption.

You DO know that "if" you play that sound BACKWARDS and slow it down a little,.....you would hear the word "ROLEX" repeated over and over again.

.....and you can follow along by reading your bezel on later models!

By the way,....if you ever get a chance to own a watch with the venerable Valjoux Cal. 72 movement, you will be amazed at how freakin LOUD the ticking is from a distance. I could hear that sucker from 3-4 feet away! (manual wind though)

I suspect this is one of the loudest escapements of most any watch ever produced,.....da "King of Tick" if you will!

I'm really sorry I sold mine after I got it serviced, as it was cased in a very handsome Wittnauer SS case and dial. (mine was this model but with a leather band) It was very accurate, which is why Rolex used the caliber with a few added changes before they built their own in house Cosmograph caliber.

Appreciate your work!
And thanks for clearing/educating me on the static issue.

It's not everyday that we get to HEAR about watches here on TRF. It's usually pictures and texts here.
This is an awesome thread to me as it finally fills up that sound void..

If you have two, try holding one against each ear in a dark, quiet room.

Thank you Moose, you confirmed that I'm not a crazy person! :D I heard it from my Milgauss GV and now from my Exp II. I started thinking about 6 months ago that my Exp II is needing again trip to service.

Love the slow versions, too. Especially at 50%. The hiss you refer to is not annoying at all. It's asy to selectively block it out while concentrating on the other sounds.

Thanks for doing this!

If there's a lot of demand I might post a slow version.
You don't really need to...You can just use the youtube settings to play it at half speed.

I hear ticking unless I listen through a pillow (as in lying down to sleep), then I hear these tones. Why would that be?

I tried that, but it shifts the pitch back to normal, and the idea with slowing it down is to lower the pitch.

Very cool! What is the specific mechanical part in the watch contributing to generating the sounds? Is it the spinning of the rotor or the teeth of the gears periodically meshing? The frequency seems high, I wonder what the metals are..... Could anyone shed some light?

My guess is that it's mostly the palette fork. It has 3 arms and I hear 3 notes. Also, the alternating notes would suggest the two arms of the fork, which are alternately against the escape wheel (and thus prevented from ringing).

Earlier, I said sixteenth notes, but if you think of the second as the "quarter note", then I guess they would be 32nd notes, i.e., 8 notes to the beat (second).

And I guess that's what's meant by 8 beats per second?
