It triggered the metal detector in Bangalore India, which caused a major event with the security police. Also triggered alarms in Muscat Oman, security wasn't happy I kept it on. Dubai security was more polite, but looked at me like I was some sort of tourist flying for the first time.
I haven't tried leaving it on in the US. I guess my international experience has me trained to secure it in the carry on before I enter the airport. |

No, never.
But back in May coming back from Costa Rica they required me to remove it flying out of Liberia. I just stuck it in a small zip pocket on top of my backpack and ran it through. |

For the millionth time this has been talked about....search function must be broken with the string of repeated threads on the same beaten to death topics popping up.
In the US, no....but as much as I've traveled there are places that would either require you to take it off or require you to be wanded and searched if you don't, Terminal 3 in Dubai comes to mind, also in Argentina when traveling from Buenos Aires to Bariloche. It's usually the screen areas that don't have X-Ray machines but rather have the metal detectors. With larger international airports it has ben a hit or miss, but mostly(60% of the time) can leave it on, other 40% would take it off. To say "no need to take it off" or "I never do" tells me you don't get out much, or at least to those austere airports or little puddle jumper types in the middle of no where. As can be seen in this thread, there are places that make you take it off or hassle you about it. In these cases I just show up to the screening area with my watch already tucked away in an Oakley case in the inside flap of my pack, replace it on my wrist when I get to my gate. I am mostly nowadays just storing it before hand to avoid winning the hassle lottery. In major airports in the US however I always leave it on.......so far. |

My general rule of thumb is when traveling domestically, I keep my watches on. I have TSA pre-check so they don't give me much trouble going through security.
However, internationally I always take it off and put it in my carry on before going through security. Seems like I end of having to take it off anyway more often than not, and better to take it off before security than in front of a bunch of people who might get greedy. |

Never put it in the plastic jar! Have personally witnessed these being knocked off the table.
A tip: metal detectors are strongest at the perimeters so if you walk through with your wrist at side, may set it off vs bring your wrist to your chest, may not. Another tip: pay attention to the people in front of you. If they are getting through with watches, most likely, you will too. I fly a lot. Watch goes in the carry on or on the wrist. Varies by location. |

Dude, take a chill pill. First, OP asked in the U.S.!!!!! Even by your own admission, NO and NEVER are perfectly acceptable responses. So.......why "no" and "no need to" means we don't get out much? The list of where I have traveled via airports is quite long, to include at least 38 of the state's in the mainland. Guess what? NO, I have never, ever, ever had to. |

I've already added my 2 cents to this thread...but I thought his response was completely warranted given that there's a ton of threads exactly like this and that the information he provided was very complete and informative. Seems like no one reads the stickies or uses search anymore |

I used to fly a ton.
Only once in Chicago. But it did happen. Always be alert.

Been through many airports and have never been asked to take off my Rolex or any other watch for that matter. Never had one trip the sensor either. As a matter of fact, the TSA officers were yelling out "do not take off your watches" at McCarran international the last 2 times I traveled to Vegas.

After reading the story of the theft at the Denver airport I would zip the watch into a carry on bag, makes it difficult for someone to just pocket it. Sometimes your bin gets through the machine and you are still stuck on the wrong side of the scanner.

Earlier this year I was going though security in Bangkok airport and an American guy was in front of me at the airport. The girl asked him to take off his watch and he replied I don't have to take off my watch. She told him he did and made him do it. This was in the fast track lane and there was only the two of us there so there were no issues. He wasn't happy about it but complied.
